I don't think there is one. Unless you count Delaware, which is pretty spot-on.

What about Bucknell?

Bucknell is small, preppy, fratty.

Delaware is a good comparison.

I would say ecu for nursing and premed. Temple for business.

NC native with family in Greenville and a sibling who went to ECU and transferred out because the partying was tanking his grades (yes, that's entirely on him! But it was so easy to party there, back then at least).

I do agree that now, ECU is known for nursing, especially. Otherwise, not a great academic rep, despite its attempts to do better reputationally. I would look at UNC-Greenville, UNC-Asheville before ECU if they have the majors your DC wants.

OP mentioned Bucknell. I know it gets a bad rap on DCUM as a party/fraternity-riddled/rich kid school. I know someone who is affiliated with the college, and I know a couple of recent alumni, and it does have excellent academics and some truly outstanding students and solid major programs. I think it's entirely possible to have a serious, academic four years there. But it does indeed have a frat culture and some toxic "frat bro" behaviors that are only very recently getting called out and cracked down on more. A visit there and some frank talks with current students probably would be key to considering it.

This is correct. Both Harrisonburg and Boone also are waaaay nicer than Greenville.

This is a joke right? (Sometimes you can't tell on the internet).

Not joking. Boone is a great mountain town and Harrisonburg doesn't suck at all. Greenville...

Pitt would be a couple notches up. West Chester and Bloomsburg are a notch below and more on par with ECU.
Having a hard time thinking of an equivalent.

Agreed, I don't think there is one. Temple is probably equivalent in terms of admissions difficulty, but very different setting and vibe. Honestly, closest thing would probably be Penn State.

I think Penn State is more on VT's level and JMU is slightly less competitive.

I could see similar students at JMU and ECU, kids who are more social than academic and couldn't get into the "first tier" state schools. Nothing wrong with that; I have a kid like that myself.

I agree that both are social and have a lot of students who didn't get into the first tier schools. BUT. East Carolina is definitely well below JMU in terms of academic profile. For example, 70% of incoming freshman at ECU had an SAT score below 1200 (vs. 49% at JMU). 75% had ACT below 24 (vs. 28% at JMU).

I lived in NC for a long time, and I would take Harrisonville over Greenville any day! JMU is also the better school.

^Harrisonburg, I mean.

JMU is a great school, especially for Computer Science. It's a great value.

Greenville SC is one of the coolest, most interesting and delightful small towns I've ever seen. Are we talking about somewhere else?

Isn't GMU better though for that? And I think it may cut more ice where it matters, in the nation's capital area.

Maybe you haven't been there in a while. You should visit Harrisonburg now, it's got a lot going on. It's a very pretty college town with a nice downtown.
