NC native with family in Greenville and a sibling who went to ECU and transferred out because the partying was tanking his grades (yes, that's entirely on him! But it was so easy to party there, back then at least).

I do agree that now, ECU is known for nursing, especially. Otherwise, not a great academic rep, despite its attempts to do better reputationally. I would look at UNC-Greenville, UNC-Asheville before ECU if they have the majors your DC wants.

OP mentioned Bucknell. I know it gets a bad rap on DCUM as a party/fraternity-riddled/rich kid school. I know someone who is affiliated with the college, and I know a couple of recent alumni, and it does have excellent academics and some truly outstanding students and solid major programs. I think it's entirely possible to have a serious, academic four years there. But it does indeed have a frat culture and some toxic "frat bro" behaviors that are only very recently getting called out and cracked down on more. A visit there and some frank talks with current students probably would be key to considering it. [/quote]
