In the past couple months, neighbors' dogs have been pooping in front of our house. It might be the same dog. We have to step over that part of the lawn from the parking lot to get to our house and don't want DD to step in it.
Is there a (natural) remedy that I can sprinkle on the lawn to discourage the dogs pooping there? I know they smell the poop from their previous visit or from other dogs. |
| Start with a "curb your dog" sign and send a note round the neighborhood listserv if you have one to gently remind people to curb their dog and pick up after them. |
OP here. Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. First thing I wanted to do is bag the poop and fling it at the house I think it may belong to. Second thing was to put up a webcam. |

scatter moth balls, crush them up it burns their nose, also put up some lights that come on with a motion sensor.
or put it back on the sdiewalk have your dog crap in your own yard when you tell it to and then take it for a walk for exercise. |
I understand you cannot control where a dog relieves itself, however, you as the owner can PICK IT UP. The motion detector might be good if they're pooping at night, but I figure they're pooping during the day when i'm not home. Thanks for the tip about the moth balls. |
| Shoot bb's at it. |
We have our dog go in the same spot evertime, and base don the fact dogs are creatures of habit like that, chances are it is the same dog, narrow down the time by watchign your yard and you will catch them. Also if it rains after the moth balls put another batch out there becuase they wash away |

OP, we have the same problem. It is from an issue that existed before we moved into this house. We have let the new neighbors know loud and clear that we have boundaries. This does not have to be a negative experience (for those who do not believe in having discussions with neighbors).
I agree with PP that a camera is the first place to start, so you can prove who is doing what. There are great cameras out there now. Or if you are home, you can catch them yourself on/near your property with a good zoom lens. In certain areas, the neighbor can easily be fined for not picking up after their dog. We are responsible with our dogs and we expect the same common courtesy, especially from neighbors (and their dog walkers). It is a simple request that costs more by offending than not. |

I always yank on my dog's leash when I see him trying to poop on someone's lawn, especially when its close to their front door or driveway. Sometimes it works but other times he won't budge and he goes right there, I always pick it up but I still feel bad.....I was never sure if this was ok or am I a bad neighbor? :O)

A hose should work. Especially if your neighbors are walking the dog at the time.
If you can get a video of them failing to pick up the offending poop, send it to them and ask them to stop. If it hapens again, publish the video (neighborhood listserve, youtube, etc.) You won't get invited for dinner, but you'll make your point. |
| I always pretend I am picking up dog poop in case neighbors are watching, but if anything, I might be tossing a few leaves over it. |
well I hope you step in a big pile next time nasty lady. |
Well for heaven's sake, don't CAMOUFLAGE it! Leave it out in the open, so we can avoid it. Or so we can pick it up, bag it, light the bag on fire, leave the flaming bag on your doormat, ring your doorbell and run away. (I would so love to do this. But in my neighborhood, the main offenders are big guys with pitbulls and I'd probably get shot.) |
ah, its more because I forgot a plastic bag than trying to be devious. I figure if I cover it with leaves or sticks that it will just decompose there? |
no you said "I always pretend to pick it up" not that you sometimes do that when you forget the bag.....and for the record, before it decomposes where you left it under the pile of leaves, some poor kid riding their bike or running in the yard is going step in it and drag it all over the place (hopefully he will visit you and walk all over your white rugs!) |
