ECNL moving to school year not calendar

ODP only does this because it allows a single coach (and assistant) to manage more players. Which means more $$$ for ODP.

Maybe, but ODP is so cheap

Even if that's the case, it's better for all for development.

It's not. It is better for RAE, but not better for development. Playing with and against the best is what makes a player better. Not playing with kids toeing the ball and running into each other. How would that help development.

Yeah ODP does it but they run across a state. It can absolutely be done at the level. But not with all these pay to play clubs. As is some clubs in ECNL and MLSN struggle to have a halfway decent goalie. Now you need 2x that per club. Plus extra coaches, more refs, more fields, it won't fit their business model.

There's enough teams at plenty of clubs with 12-month windows, especially the younger ages and with boys. They could do 6, especially since most P2P clubs compete already in lesser leagues. The talent ISN'T all that different. In the end, those teams/clubs would be stronger with better players. You could do a full grade team perhaps by 11v11 OR HS.

Just heard straight from a friend who is connected with ECNL. They will allow kids to play club soccer as long as they are still in high school. Sounds like GY but this would only be for the U18/19 age group but all the details have not been provided.

More chatter elsewhere: "Oneof the players on my son’s team was told by the administration in our club that MLS Next 2 (and presumably MLS Next, non academy) will be moving to grade year in 2026-2027. Has anybody heard this? I know USYS is and I think ECNL,but I hadn’t heard anything about MLS Next or Next 2."

There should absolutely be a U18/U19 age group although there will be far fewer U19s with the 9/1 cutoff. All kids should be given the option to continue club soccer through high school and this shouldn’t be the least bit controversial.

Certainly looks like this is the way things are headed but mlsnext is the wildcard and could do some creative math to stay BY with some exceptions. Seems more trouble than it’s worth but who knows.

Also curious to see what the academies do, they mirror non academy through U16 and then U18 looks different.

Wonder if GA and mlsnext will issue a joint statement this week? If GA announces on their own, mlsnext will get some pressure from clubs with both GA and mlsnext to say something either way.

According to our director of coaching. MLS Next 2 will move to SY by 2026/27

Blackhawks of Saint Paul (Minnesota), North Division of MLSNext2.

Regarding MLS Next 1, undecided.

p2p MLS1 will move to SY. Club owners do not want to lose revenue. Yes, BY crowds will argue on that, but club owners are not stupid.

p2p MLS1 does not need to be creative, just to stay in BY. For what, please BY crowds? It makes zero business sense. Only MLS Academy will remain in BY for International competition.

I don’t think there is any advantage to mlsnext staying BY either. The dynamic with the mls academies makes mlsnext different so I’m not banking on anything until it is announced. In contrast, GA without a doubt is going SY.

I also don’t think academies will stay BY for international competition. They play very few (some don’t play any) international games per year. They’ve been playing English academy teams for years without an issue so clearly they can make it work. There may be some other reason academies want to stay BY though.

Strange comment. I’ve got one in GA and one in mlsnext. One with a fall birthday and one with a spring birthday.

What’s your view on mlsnext and academies?
