I don't care about the Superbowl one bit... who's with me?

Anonymous
I am a single mom with a 4-year-old DD. I feel like I'm the only person who will not be watching the Superbowl tomorrow. It holds absolutely no interest for me, and no, I don't care about the commercials either. I won't go into the way pro sports are patriarchal and the way our country heroicizes these silly young men. The reason I'm not watching is that I just don't care and would rather spend my time doing something else. Is that so wrong? I feel like a "bad American" here.

You are not alone, wrong, or a ''bad American."

Right there with you. Never watched football (or baseball). I find it excruciatingly boring and ridiculously overcommercialized. Luckily for me, DH feels the exact same way. We'll be having family game night.

Lots of people don't care. Others only care because it's become a spectacle and an undeclared national holiday. There's no right or wrong.

However, your "silly young men" comment may rub some the wring way. It seems that you're not content to ignore the game because you're not interested - you look down on others because they do care about the game, or sports in general. That attitude is not going to win you many friends, especially these days when girls are becoming more and more involved in organized sports. I'm sure many of the things you do for fun and entertainment are silly to others - do you often have ragging on you because of those choices?

I have no interest either. I used to have Season's tickets to the Redsking but cancelled them about 10 yrs. ago. I'm glad I was here for the Salad days of the Redskins but one day I realized pro athletes, many of them, are such assholes that if I had the opportunity to meet them, I would decline. You are not a bad American for not caring about the Superbowl. I have John Grishom's new book to read tomorrow and that is much better than watching steroir taking overgrown, overpaid, oversexed men playing games, particularly the QB of the Steelers who has gotten away with rape.

I don't care either. I don't really like football. I would be a bit more interested if my hometown team was in it but still only b/c of the "it's our team" aspect.

Actually my love of scrapbooking and making potholders make me a target of ridicule constantly.

Oh thank you! I thought I was the only one, too. I hate football with a passion. I find it so boring; a bunch of men running into each other and piling on top of each other every few feet over a piece of pigskin. What really makes me sick is that they get paid millions of dollars to do it.
The values here are so distorted.

I am VERY excited about the Superbowl! It means that the crowds at the Chinese New Year parade won't be so bad.

Also, I enjoy 5-10 minutes of the Puppybowl, and the kitten halftime show.

Go Steelers! Got my Terrible Towel right here.

See, the rest of us don't even know what that means. The Terrible Towel sounds like something you'd put on the bed to avoid a wet spot.

No interest here, either. I do go to a Super Bowl party every year because we get invited and I enjoy the food and company. Sometimes I don't know what teams are in it until I actually get there! I don't pay much attention to the game and have fun anyway.

I'm with you!!

So what you don't care about this one event. This is America, land of individuality and choices.

I don't care either, though I told my DH that I will be rooting for the Packers and that I don't have to watch the game to do that I don't really care who wins but because we used to live in Wisconsin, I figured it's a good reason to choose that team.
