Just like GA, mlsnext can do whatever they want but they face the same logistical challenges in trying to be the only league staying BY while everyone else changes to SY. They could go SY (I think GA likely, mlsnext less likely) or BY with some exceptions for sept-dec (more likely for mlsnext given they already have a somewhat similar process with biobanding albeit different purpose). They may be unhappy about it but they will be forced to react to the entire youth soccer landscape going SY.

Is there any incentive or advantage at all for MLSNext staying BY when the whole landscape is changing?

I guess we will find out when they announce a decision. I don’t think p2p clubs can manage two different systems and the transition between SY and BY at U11-U13 or whenever a q4 enters the club from a SY team. If there is an advantage maybe mls academies will stay BY.

People insisting that mlsnext will stay BY because that was what they were arguing for in Nov 2024 forget what actually happened. Mlsnext wanted US soccer to keep everyone BY. They did not want the result that Us soccer announced in Nov which was leaving the choice up to the leagues and basically letting everyone do whatever they want which apparently is SY. I think the mlsnext decision is a little bit less certain compared to GA and I am curious as to what they decide.

I think there are way too many issues and risks staying BY. Also, MLSN is already winning the battle with ECNL; staying BY would give ECNL new life in the boys side. It would also leave room for another new league to further reduce MLSN player pool.

The mlsn2 product is somewhat for kids who want to play high school so BY makes absolutely no sense. Also how do you move up and down between next 1 and 2 if they have different cut offs.

People also forget that MLSN and GA have an alliance and many clubs are now including both. In those situations, having one BY and one SY would not help those clubs.

Now we know GA (copy and paste) is SY, MLSN will be SY. The only question is the MLSN Academies

I think this is correct. Not because GA is going SY, but because there is no other logical solution.

Will be interesting to see what MLS academies do. Their purpose is to develop players and make money by signing or selling them. To that extent, most (all?) players they will make money off of (which are a very very small percentage of the total kids at the academy) are being played up. There are some academies that are very strict with their age groups and only play kids up if they are in the top half of the older age group. Other academies regularly float kids back and forth between age groups.

Does the age group structure really matter to the academies?

Anyone want to leak the specific details?

I guess this contribution gets us closer to 1,000 but that's about it.

No because they already bio-band. Kids can play up or play down already, so whatever 12 month range hasn't mattered to the academies in the past, now or future.

Will be there as soon as this 3 day weekend, as late as next week. Or people could have just waited until post announcements to have a discussion about the decision.
