Recommend a good car for snow

We need a new car and after Wednesday's experience of being stuck several times, we might as well look for a car that drives well in snow. Something, other than an SUV, would be ideal.

I love my Subaru Forrester. Although it is considered a small SUV, it really is a station wagon. It has All Wheel Drive and sits very high off the ground. The "trunk"/ hatch back space holds tons of stuff. While we don't get much snow around this area typically, I love the AWD in the rain and feel very safe in the car. It has always performed extremely well in the snow for me.

My Camry actually did well in the snow.

I have a rav4 - it's a camry with a bigger shell. we love it and we never ever had problems while driving in snow.

actually, my friends that can't drive in snow often call me to drive them around when it's necessary to leave the house and the road conditions are bad.

Any Subaru or a Ford Fusion would have all wheel drive. For snow, I personally like skinnier tires and a stick shift. That will get you out of most things in this area. But it's been so long since I had a stick shift, I can't recommend anything. I had had a Civic, and it was awesome.

If you have a little more $$ anything new or light used from Audi. Next to Subaru their Quattro all-wheel drive system is remarkable.

From the owner of a mid-90's Audi wagon that was awesome mushing through the snow.

I drive and have always driven Honda Civics with manual transmission and I lived in Chicago and Wisconsin before moving here and the civic did fine in both those places that got LOTS of snow.

Anything with all wheel drive (preferable, but I've driven in the snow with front wheel drive as well) with ABS brakes and a good set of all weather or snow tires would be fine.

My dad has a Subaru Impreza that's probably about 5-8 years old and he swears by it for snowy weather. Several other family members have Ford Taurus X (now the Ford Explorer, I think). Civics are also typically pretty good, and my sister has a 2004 Ford Taurus that is not all wheel drive (front wheel drive), but does well in the snow.

We have a Forrester purchased last year and find we have no trouble in bad weather. We love it.

Any AWD vehicle will work pretty well.

But stay away from sport sedans like the BMW or Audi. They have great AWD and very good traction control, but typically they have low profile tires, which are not made for snow. And they have front ends that have little clearance, so you can easily hit a chunk of ice. I'm not saying they are horrible. I have one. But they are not ideal.

The AWD station wagons like Subaru and Volvo seem to do well. I would think a small SUV will work well too, as long as it is all wheel drive.

Agreed about the manual civics. Mine could go anywhere! Unfortunately it didn't fit two car seats easily -- hatchback -- so it got traded in for a Sienna. The Sienna does well in snow too, actually.

We also had a Subaru and it was great in the snow. When the van goes, we will trade it in for an Outback.

Did great in the snow with our Volvo Xc70 and Lexus GS AWD.

We had an Audi A3 that drove wonderfully in last year's big snow (we have since moved). It's fun to drive, as well.

All wheel drive and good tires are the best. I finally bought a snow set and it's made a HUGE difference.
