I recently began staying at home with our 20 week old DS. We only have one car, which my husband uses to get to work, and we live less than a 5 minute walk from the Columbia Heights metro station. As soon as the weather warms up even the smallest bit, I want to start taking DS out and about. The metro would be the easiest and most convenient way to get around, but I am concerned about germs. DS was a little premature, and seems susceptible to respiratory infections (his first "cold" turned out to be RSV and landed him in the hospital for 5 days), so I have avoided taking him on the metro until now. I was curious about when others started taking their babies on the metro. |
6 weeks. Your kid is actually old enough for you to refer to his age in months. Barring very unusual circumstances, he should be fine. |
PP again - I am also of the belief that there is no need to wait until it warms out to take him out. We had our DD out on walks when she was just a few days old in temperatures in the 30s - she was bundled up, of course. |
We used to take our DS on a walk that involved going just one stop and then walking home. Probably strated at 3-4 months. He loved seeing the people, the train, etc.
Just go at off-peak times and steer clear of anyone hacking and I think you'll be fine. I'd wear him in a carrier and not use a stroller. |
I live 5 mins from the same metro station ![]() |
2 weeks, but it was may |
I do take him on walks around the neighborhood, but I'm starting to feel a little stir-crazy and I want to take him down the the Mall, museums, etc. It sounds like I have nothing to worry about at this age, so thanks everyone! ![]() |
It was definitely at only a few weeks we started taking the metro, both the train and bus. I wouldn't stress about it, go out and have fun! |
how old is 20 weeks? LOL |
Probably 6 weeks, to go to my follow-up o.b. appointment. It's possible it was earlier. |
The week/month thing bugs me a little. Yeah, he's 20 weeks or 5 months. But what about when he's 48 weeks? Does that mean he's 12 months/1 year old? What about week 52? Damn our Gregorian calendar! ![]() |
Two weeks. Not my first choice, but this was after the snowmaggeden of last year and we couldn't get the car out to drive to the ped's (and I wasn't about to trust a cab), so the Metro it was, with her snugged up in a Moby. (as a FTM I was equally scared of going on the Metro and of missing the doctor's appointment because I was terrified that something -- what exactly I can't say now, but something -- was wrong with DD. Not getting enough to eat, still jaundiced, etc.) In any event, it all worked out. Now with your preemie, the situation is maybe different. But he's at least started his shots, right? |
Just use months. He's the next month old on the date of his birthday. So if he was born on the 7th and he's 6 months on July 7th, then he's 7 months on August 7th, 8 months on September 7th, etc. |
Another one? This reminds me of the OP who was trying to figure out how old her baby was so she could give friends and family advice about Christmas gifts. My favorite DCUM thread ever! |
I found it! http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/136725.page |
