Meh. The game was 2-1 Indy at the halfway point. Madison played second and third string players and several guys who are on the JV team the whole second half, while Independence kept their starters in the entire game and had a number of players who never saw the field, despite it being a preseason scrimmage.

OK, so starters on starters, Indy was a bit better. Which makes sense that Indy would be ranked alongside Madison and Robinson. You can't seriously argue that Indy is not in the top three given how weak the whole class is this year. I have them at #1 for now, but we will see.

beating the Madison backups by 7-0 in the second half of a scrimmage, and running up 17 goals on Loudon County, doesn't show where Indy stands relative to the top 4-5 teams in the state. it is a shame that they did not schedule any of the teams that they want to measure themselves against. my guess is that Indy's undisciplined style of play and its lack of competition would hold them back from beating Robinson, Madison, Riverside, and possibly a couple of others. I would put them top 5, but definitely not #1.

Laughable. Riverside coach asked not to play Indy this year(probably bc he hates DW). As for the other 6A teams, it could be a lot of different reasons. There are teams that have to be scheduled, other teams that have traditionally been on their schedule, first year in 6A...etc. Indy is a strong team again this year and will be competitive. They will have to earn it as the season goes on but the comment about no one takes them seriously? Maybe Riverslide should have taken them more seriously when they didn't make States last year. I know the players did but probably not their horrible, entitled parents.

I would maybe be a little more thoughtful before making comments about a coach and how he feels about others. In looking at Riversides schedules year in a year out, I'm not sure they are in the business of shying away from competition. As another poster commented as well. Let's also be aware that Riverside lost 1 game by a goal in the last 30 seconds to a good team that they had beaten 8 straight times prior to that game... To never lose a game is unrealistic and an unfair expectation. I'm sure we would all love to see that match up, but it is just not in the cards this year.

Here are the details. Riverside scored 10 seconds into the game and it was never competitive. Oakmont scored to make it 6-1 and one of the kids yelled - we’re back! Well not so much. the team that got lucky by a goal in the knockout round of the playoffs. Too bad they wouldn't schedule Riverside this year. It would have looked a lot like Riverside vs Oakton.

To be clear, I think Indy totally deserves to be in the same tier as Madison and Robinson, and maybe even the favorite of the three. My point was just that the 9-1 score is misleading.

Agree with you there. I don't put a ton of stock in scrimmage scores, but they are definitely in the same tier. I think it is those three and everyone else, with maybe Cosby in the mix (we will see in April).

This is 100% b.s. Riverside coach wanted nothing more than to play Indy, as Riverside already plays on of the more challenging schedules and could have played Indy vs another easy win game like Heritage or Broad Run

Yes, not a parent of Madison, but for them to transfer they would have to be from district unless they have a parent working in Fcps.

Huh. So lights out goalie - good enough to have aspirations to play for top program like Landon - just happened to live in Madison district? Funny how that doesn't seem to happen for Falls Church or Annadale or other schools..

Why would a really good goalie want to play for Annandale or Falls Church LOL

Playing for a team that needs a good goalie would mean you're THE GUY and you're developing against the most shots and having to perform.

Going to Madison means you're playing behind a much higher caliber defense, so the game reps you're taking are less frequent etc.

The obvious answer is Madison is higher profile and gets you more of a chance with college. But if you're having to drop from Landon to Madison it means walk-on time in college if you want to try and play.

Again, ignore the second half. They beat Madison in the first half, and Madison is the only other team in contention for the top spot right now. I don't care about Riverside or Class 5, Riverside has that one locked with Indy out of the picture.

Long time NOVA lacrosse fan and parent of two boys (9 & 12) in the Woodson pyramid. Decided to start taking them to some games this year and caught both the Centerville opener and tonight vs Herndon.

Monday’s result vs Centreville was a frustrating one for Woodson. They were clearly the better team but fell victim to a sloppy first game after having a bye week to start the season, and it showed. They dominated possession after possession offensively and generated quality looks all night, but couldn’t finish to save their life. It was one of the worst shooting performances I’ve seen. I had #24 for Woodson around 2 for 17 on the night shooting and the rest of the group wasn’t much better. Woodson dug themselves into a hole, rallied late to force overtime, and even in OT had multiple point blank chances turned away before Centerville won it in double OT on EMO. Credit to Centerville, they played hard and their attackman #3 looked like an all-state level player. I heard it was his first game back after missing all preseason and they looked like a completely different team with him. Overall you could sense the frustration from Woodson as it felt like nothing bounced their way and that if they played that game 10 times, they would win that game at least 9 of them. It was probably a needed early wake up call.

Tonight’s matchup vs Herndon was a much better indicator. Herndon looked like a top team, I can see why they’re ranked in the 7 to 10 range in the state. Their York commit, #1 at attack is a problem and their SSDMs / poles were all over the field. This is also a group that handled Lake Braddock in a scrimmage and hadn’t really been tested yet.

Game wise, Woodson again started slow shooting and went down 2-0 despite getting clean looks almost every possession. In the second quarter they settled in and took a 4-3 lead into half. Early third they pushed it to 6-4 and from there it felt like they were in control. Woodson slowed things down, moved it well, and the refs started putting really early stall calls on them which made the second half a bit of a game of keep away. Herndon made a push late, but had no answer for Woodson’s goalie and the Cavs closed it out 6-5. It felt like if the refs weren’t issuing super early stall calls that Woodson could have kept scoring every possession. It became a weird game script in the 2nd half.

Overall it felt like a quality top 10 matchup. After the first quarter Woodson played cleaner, looked more composed, and felt like the slightly better team the rest of the way. Based on what I’ve seen and some early results, it feels like Woodson and West Potomac are right there with Lake Braddock not far behind in what should be a tight race out of Region C for the last spot in states. Should be a fun one to follow!

Herndon Dad here... This breakdown on the game last night is pretty accurate. I was impressed by Woodson's Defense. All 5 our (Herndon's) goals last night were either in transition or were on EMO - no 6v6 goals. Woodson's LSM #22 Shut down C. Haire (#1 - Our york commit), and we couldn't get anything past their goalie who must of had 15+ saves.

The 2nd half of that game was super frustrating watching as a parent, as Woodson had the ball 80% of the time. Those early stall calls by the Ref was a little ridiculous. They were calling it 60 seconds into Woodson's possessions. It seemed to me like they were attacking the net, not sure why it kept being called. It forced Woodson to get out of their game plan, invert and kill clock once they had to keep it in.

That never allowed Herndon's O to get into a rhythm in the 2nd half. I think it was a wake up call to our Herndon team after having two easy matchups to start the year (South Lakes and Edison). I do agree, it was a very competitive game overall with minimal turnovers, and seemed like we were watching two top 10 teams play.

with a lot of parity in region D, I believe Herndon can absolutely compete for the 2 seed in states between Langley, Yorktown, Tilly, and Oakton - with Madison more than likely securing the 1 seed.

One side note: Our best Pole #9 and Bates commit appeared to dislocate his knee in the last min of the game and had an air cast put on. Praying for his recovery!

D1 colleges don’t really care about what public high school you play for. They look at what clubs you play for and the competition. (It’s a different story for private school kids.)
