2.9 Trapped Player Exceptions.

2.9.1 Trapped U18/U19 Player. An ECNL Registered Player that is in 11th grade, but who is
age appropriate for the U18/U19 age group is classified as a “Trapped U18/U19 Player”.
A Trapped U18/U19 Player is eligible to participate in games at two (2) U17 ECNL
National Events in the ECNL Season (excluding the ECNL Post Season). No more than
three (3) Trapped U18/U19 Players may participate in any single game at any such U17
ECNL National Event.

2.9.1.1 A “Trapped U18/U19 Player” is a player that is a senior in high school (12th grade),
who has aged out according to our Age Eligibility Chart above, but still enrolled in high
school classes. A Trapped U18/U19 Player is eligible to participate in U18/U19 ECNL
Competition provided they submit proof of high school enrollment.

2.9.2 Trapped U15 Player. An ECNL Registered Player that is in 8th grade (not in high
school), but who is age appropriate for the U15 age group is classified as a “Trapped U15
Player”. A Trapped U15 Player is eligible to participate in U14 ECNL Competition that is
played during the player’s high school association’s sanctioned soccer season. A
Trapped U15 Player that competes in an U14 ECNL Competition pursuant to this Rule
2.9.2 may also compete in the same ECNL Fixture at U15 through U18/U19, provided she
only plays one (1) ECNL Competition per day. No more than two (2) Trapped U15
Players may participate in any individual U14 ECNL Competition.

This is a bandaid fix that was created due to changing to birth year. This is only during the highschool school season. And very limited numbers. This doesn't solve the problem.

So the bandaid eliminates the none existent problem and people still complaining haha
ECNL didn't like the band aid and wanted to go school year. This wasn't started from some letter writing campaign from DCUM.

#1- At U-14 only 2 trapped players are allowed per game. At U-17 three are allowed. They are allowed on a team that already has 20+ full time players--so what, that team and coach is supposed to bench their players at the end of the season to allow a random player to come join? Our team had 6 trapped players. That meant each got 1-2 games in for the entire spring season while their teammates were off playing HS soccer. The' younger' same grade team wasn't happy or welcoming about it.

#2 trapped players are not allowed to play in National Playoffs and are only allowed to play in 2 showcase games (there are 9 + games available in any given region). What would you do if your January - August player was told they weren't allowed to play at Nationals and could only do a limited number of showcases due to their birthday month. You'd be pissed and to suggest otherwise would be a lie.

The announcement will come no later than 11/15.

My bet is ECNL and GA go to SY in 25, and local leagues go to SY in 26. MLS stays in BY.

If this ends up being the case NWSL Next will also be BY when implemented. Which makes sense since MLSN is all about playing up

Maybe not. But until someone makes some more convincing arguments for the benefits of BY cutoffs to the bottom 99.9% of players, to offset the costs, I don't think the issue will ever go away.

Argue the benefits of BY?
Is this a joke?

You need to focus on the benefits of discipline and training well consistently.
Stop seeking ready-made excuses

That response so perfectly sums up this thread.

SY: "Here are the reasons we should change back to SY"

BY: "Nope, those are stupid. You are stupid. Lol."

SY: "OK, well, a lot of people and independent sources recognize those problems too. Is there a good argument for why we switched to birth year?"

BY: "Europe uses these cutoffs. Your kid sucks at soccer."

Fully decked out! Got the VictimShoes, VictimPants, VictimShirt and VictimJacket to go along with you Victimhood.

This thread is wild. If your kid is good enough you will know it and people will be interested. If not, why do you even care about this? You are worried the change might drop your kid from ECNL to RL with the same end result...they aren't getting recruited? Or maybe they can use the new change to move up to the ECNL team and then still not be recruited.

I know we are all looking for advantages in life, but it becomes pretty obvious who the top players are. They are often playing up already.

This is right, but it cuts both ways. If it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. So why change? (Or why not change.)

Makes most sense. Do you think there was some sort of agreement between the two girls leagues ?

Are we really just making up rumors whole cloth at this point? GA is not going to do ECNL a favor. AND GA actually gets to have a say if they discuss this at the US Soccer level, ECNL has to rely on others.

Because they can make more money? Grab more market share? Gain more power in US soccer? This has nothing to do with kids and never has. They will do what is best for the organization regardless of what it means for these kids or those kids.

Trapped players are not trapped during playoffs. They can always play with their “real” team if that team is playing.

The only reason they are trapped is because ECNL shuts down during HS season to accommodate those players.

If ECNL schedule league games during HS season then there would be no trapped players.

Welp, I guess that means changing the cutoff date is the only solution then.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking youth soccer's main and only goal is to churn out the top 1 percent of players or it's only goal is to get kids college scholarships. Or even that playing in college is every kids goal. 'Cause it isn't.
