FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

No people names. especially no living people

Is that an FCPS rule?

Colin Powell was still alive when Colin Powell ES opened.

It is still not a good policy to name it after a person still alive.
Especially, when he is running ads for a candidate for governor.

Exhibit A in why Obama HS is perfect.

All Oakton Elementary kids do not go to Oakton High School.

Again, the post office is down the street.

Oak Hill or Floris would get my vote.

cont. But, I don't see how they do not send Oak Hill Elem kids to KAA. It is the closest elementary neighborhood, with the exception of Discovery Square that goes to Floris. And, Chantilly needs relief.

Oak Hill is such a dumb name though. A bunch of people ashamed of their Herndon addresses got together and tried to sound more like Oakton. Discovery sounds good to me. It sounds educational / inspirational without played out political or nationalistic names like other Nova schools (Independence and Freedom high schools in Loudoun, Liberty HS in Fauquier, Freedom and Patriot HS in Prince William, etc).

No. That is not what happened. You likely know that. They changed the zip code, opened a post office and had community vote on a name. It pretty much describes the area between DTR and Highway 50. Look at a map. It is a fairly large area and much of it is closer to Fairfax or Chantilly than Herndon.

Discovery is a terrible name.

Either Floris or Oak Hill is better than Discovery. People are not going to have that hard a time keeping Oak Hill and Oakton apart if that name were picked.

Western High School--Reid is recommending a comprehensive traditional high school with boundaries. No mention of when boundaries will be determined that I see.

Looks like it will be an AP school.

I would love for Reid to pivot and think about the KAA facilities - there are already playgrounds and two standalone buildings on the grounds. This would be a great place for an early education Academy program with a small preschool housed on the ground floor of one of those buildings.

That playground space is needed for the high school. They can easily move the playground equipment to some other place that makes more sense for a preschool. Is this your last ditch attempt to lower attendance at the new high school?

Just call it West County Hugh School and be done with it.

What? No, I specifically mentioned using one of the extra buildings.

They only get to 2000 high school seats if they use the two "extra" buildings for classrooms, not Play-Doh storage units.

Before they decide on any special program, they need to concentrate on the basic comprehensive high school and decide what the defined boundaries shall be.

First things first.

This is what gets Reid in trouble. She wants to "envision the possibilities" instead of taking care of the basic needs.

Right now, the need is to reduce overcrowding in area schools and establish a solid, traditional high school to educate students of all types.
