| Yes, interesting read. Thanks for posting. |

Not worth it if one is fortunate to have a "Chinese mother".
See accompanying article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704111504576059713528698754.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_RIGHTTopCarousel_1 This approach may suggest the $140, 000 for high school is better invested in the markets ... or saved for College. |

This "Chinese Mother" article is truly horrible! I do hope the author's students at Yale would sue her for making discriminatory statements.
Unfortunately, she will sell more copies of her book and make the round of TV shows and may even quit law school to have her own "reality" show to teach us all how to raise our kids her way. She can make home visits and teach us how to abuse our kids and humiliate them! And the fact that these horrible generalizations and either/or fallacies are being mouthed by an intellectual at an Ivey school just goes to show the the level of degradation of the American public sphere these days. Goodbye critical thinking! |
| The troll is back in form. |
|
This place is amazing. Anytime somebody posts an opinion or link that another may disagree with, he/she is labelled as a troll. How about debating the topic instead of resorting to personal attacks?
And who exactly is the troll? The original poster or one of the people who replied? |
|
The troll is visciously attacking the author of the WSJ and other posters. This is how she "debates" on DCUM. It is unfortunate she can't tame her unbridled envy for a fleeting moment to reflect on the pros and cons of a parental approach in conflict with the way she was raised or raises her own children.
In typical American fashion the troll's (ala Tuscon Tea Bagger) only retort is to incite Yale students to sue their Professor. You think and sound like Sarah Palin. |
| New poster here. I read the article about the "Chinese mother's" book and it is appauling. What if one of her kids committed suicide for goodness sake. I guess I'm too Western-centric, but what she describes amounts to emotional abuse over here. Someone call child protective services and let these kids have a friggin playdate and the freedom to make some of their own choices. |
There is an extremely disruptive person on DCUM who needs to be ignored. Check out the end of the "Supporting Your Gifted Kid in MOCO" thread to see her in action, and on that thread she also admits she is behind the Alexandria Academy lunacy. The hard part is telling her apart from persons with really strong opinions. There seem to be a few people online who either support the chinese mom's approach, or think all HG/PG kids need to be homeschooled, with no grey areas or allowance for diferences among kids. I'm all for engaging this second group, although it's difficult because they tend to shout their opinions. But at least with this second group (or single person maybe), you don't just get abuse, instead you get a definite point of view and set of opinions. |
|
Would it be THAT hard to get registered posters? People could still be anonymous. It would help in terms of knowing who is who.
As for the Chinese mother, it's pretty easy to find her comments outrageous. |
|
Oh, you're calling me a troll? I don't think so. This is actually my second post on this forum. I've been reading it for a few days but haven't been posting.
If anything, you are the one who sound like a troll. It's not clear to me why you think what I said is "vicious." It's disapproving, sarcastic, and annoyed. Yes, her students should sue her for the lack of intellect in her article. They should ask for their money back too. This woman is publishing an article to promote a book. She's being polemical in the most appalling way, exaggerating both the western and the so-called "Chinese" approaches to parenting. She aims to incite, not to debate. And I do find it horrible that an intellectual who should be teaching her students to make reasonable arguments and to think critically is writing in this polarizing manner. She can make her points without the sensationalism she uses to provoke hostility. This is my issue with the article, not what parenting approach she uses. She is making a caricature of both Asian parents and western parents. As I said, she will sell more copies of her book. So my criticism is of the rhetoric of the article more than anything else. I didn't want to say anything about the content because that would be biting her bate. And it is exactly the rhetoric of right wing talk radio and hate mongering that is debasing this country. And I can't wait to hear how you are going to "debate" this masterpiece! |

Better yet, I have a better idea, why don't we as Americans legislate how parents in our country parent and raise our kids from birth until college:
1. set limits on the amount of homework done per night 2. instill mandatory time for kids to watch TV, play computer games and video games 3. mandatory daily sport requirement for lacrosse, sailing (or rowing/crew), football and field hockey 4. ban the violin and piano 5. ban shouting or yelling at kids 6. provide a hotline number to DCUM where kids can call in to report appalling parental behavior 7. daily worship for at least 15 min 8. mandatory free time of 2 h per day for the child to do whatever they please without parental supervision 9. any kid with straight As, WPSSI 99 percentile, NMSF, major national academic awards may be audited for potential violation of the child rearing code 10. those gaining "All America" or "Junior Olympics" designation in any sport will get a tuition rebate of $30,000 to attend college and parents will receive tax deduction benefits I believe creation of this legislation will go along way to improving the lives of children in our country. This will lead to happy children that will become prodcutive members of our work force as adults. And the child suicide rates will plummet within a generation. |
Are you referring to the writer of the WSJ article or are you trolling out another one of your big assumptions? |
|
When I wrote, "As for the Chinese mother, it's pretty easy to find her comments outrageous", I was referring to the author of the WSJ article.
This place is ridiculous. It's tedious to keep reading, "TROLL!" every few replies instead of a coherent response. |
Please, let it go. You were called a troll by a real troll. She wants you to get mad. Don't give her the satisfaction. The rest of us think your opinions are interesting and you are expressing them rationally. I even agree with most of what you say. Simply ignore the troll, as you would avoid a pile of dog poop on the sidewalk, and keep posting. |
