Check out all the states that will still have trapped players with a 9/1 cutoff. Clubs and parents will continue to complain if a 2 month exemption isn't implemented. |
People complain; couple of small states for just a month or so of kids. Won't work around here though as 9-1 or later is the default. That chart makes clear why 9-1 and not 8-1 which was the DCUM guess. The goal was never to fix everything. I don't make the rules. |
If the goal wasn't to fix everything then why switch from BY to SY? If you want to get BY people onboard with SY you need to address ALL trapped players. Also you need to keep GY cheaters out because this is what BY does now. Does this make sense? Changing to SY needs to have a valid justification not just a partial solution. Also switching to SY shouldn't create additional issues (GY) that didn't exist under BY. |
What would be humorous is if GA announced SY but it was SY+60 with a 9/1 cutoff. This would force ECNL to do the same. |

Talks about ECNL vs MLSN |
That’s a college coach calling for grad year for ECNL…. |
With your parents keeping you in Pre-k a year longer, you should be appreciative that you have an academic advantage and an athletic advantage in school but shouldn't expect others to make rules outside of school to give you a leg up. Youth sports has learned that loopholes for certain groups causes more problems than it solves. |
He’s a former college coach. Now coaches ECNL. |
GY without cheaters ie SY+60 is the only way to make things work. GY does make sense for recruiting. But if you let in the regrades / holdbacks / homeschoolers youth soccer will instantly become a game of who can hold their kids back the longest. On the boys side college coaches like euro academy washout because theyre 20 with 4 years of eligibility as opposed to 18. |
Wow. Sounds like GY for showcases could be a thing in ECNL. |
SY not supposed to solve everything, but the likely benefits have been noted ad nauseum from us soccer and other orgs. Having SY +60 widens the age gap up to 14 months which is perceived as too much, and understandably so. September 1st strikes a balance with classifying to grade year for most states. You have to pick one and stick with it; otherwise it is the Wild West. Coaches, parents and kids have enough to worry about |
I don't want to get anybody on board. This isn't some vote by random soccer parents and their kids. US Soccer said it was offering a choice of 3 strict 12 months periods to leagues, period. In reading their statement their justification was participation (and it was worded bizarrely). Expecting to use DCUM for a grassroots campaign does not make sense but we sure as heck won't have gotten to 1,000 pages without it. So the role that the SY60+ noise in getting us to 1,000 pages is commendable. Pretend consultants to the soccer league rules committee is where we are at with this forum at until we get real news again. |
SY+60 includes kids whose parents are trying to cheat the soccer system and with SY+60, they would get away with it. My condolences. |
The reason leagues want a single cutoff date is because nothing changes with current club business processes. SY+60 would add an additional verification processes. |
SY+60 = birth cert + grad verification if players were born 7/1-9/1. These are all trapped players not kids a grade older in school playing down. |
