would you uproot family for 6 months?

I WAH full-time. 2 boys- 2.5 and 5. We have a new house (and landlords to our old one). Boys are in full-day preschool.

DH is an independent consultant...just told current project ends EOY. He always finds work very quickly...just sent me an email about a 6-month project in the Netherlands. I can do my job anywhere (just need internet). We'd be back for start of Kindergarten for oldest next September. I'd most likely pay younger ones tuition to keep his spot for preschool next year....

...soooooo....would you do it??? Pre-kids we lived in Europe for a year and loved it. My DH would have loved to stay longer...even raise kids there. We are both Americans. My family is here in DC.

I am thinking WTH not! The kids aren't in 'real' school yet so it is an opportune time and would be a fun adventure.

Am I crazy?

They'd pay for his housing, etc...so we'd just keep paying mortgage on current house..and tenant has another 1.5 years on his lease.

Go for it!

OP here...thanks! Love your sense of adventure!

It really was the last thing on my mind since we purchased this house last year with the intention on staying put until the kids graduate HS...so this is a fun twist.

Exciting! You'll regret not doing it.

Funny, DH and I had a very similar converation just earlier today, saying that if the opportunity came along we would do it as well, while the kids were still young. Actually, I think we'd do it even if they were older - the experience is very valuable, IMO. Granted, at that point it would have to be for more than 6 months, I'm thinking a year minimum b/c of school, but another vote for go for it!

We did something similar for 10 months (our kids were also preschool-aged) and loved our family adventure!

The one thing that was tough at first was finding the right childcare for them--so I'd definitely do as much legwork as you could in advance and then expect that you might have a slow start to actual work once there.

Have fun!
