APS Closing Nottingham

It is 113 percent here and that’s based on a projection, not actual numbers.

Here come Nottingham moms trying to Karen their way out of mild inconvenience for themselves by lobbing massive inconvenience at others x100. Nah you’re good.

Sure, and if you actually heard what they were saying last night, they were advocating for more study into this before rushing to close a school. There's basically nothing in the pre-cip to back up this plan other than effectively "trust us."

Just because the community wasn't in on the planning doesn't mean they haven't studied it.

OK that would be great! Let APS show us the studies then! Which schools will use the swing space? For how long? How will they handle extended day? How many busses will be needed and where will they park? I assume then if APS has studied it, they must have completed a traffic study for all the increase in traffic? What will the capacity be at Tuckahoe and Discovery after they absorb Nottingham? Will they need (additional) trailers? What will enrollment be in 2026 and beyond?

And when they tell you any of that information you'll scream about how everything they are telling you is wrong or a lie or misguided. Right?

+1. Yep. They will say that APS planning is incompetent and can’t be trusted. They are already saying that. This is not a constructive community. They will just try to put up obstacles so nothing can be done. They prefer no action to help others in the county over their minor inconvenience.

Again with the nonstop hate for people trying to save their walkable, neighborhood school community. How dare they not just roll over and accept this proposal without any APS showing any supporting data!

You guys have shown yourself to be the worst over and over during the last several rounds. Many of us have lost patience.

There are very few, if any, parents who were around during whatever perceived slight you experienced during previous discussions that are still there today. Get over yourself.

No. Plenty are still around. Not a perceived slight either. Direct attacks by Nottingham pta types on McKinkley, Tuckahoe and probably other communities as well. I’m not sure how many others in Arlington are going to go pout of their way to support Nottingham here. Especially since the proposal makes sense from a $ perspective and in reducing impact on the county as a whole.

You sound hysterical. But I’m here for McCrazy 2.0.

Yeah. Not gonna work. Everyone is onto them. Nottingham is gonna have a lot of trouble working Discovery and Tuckahoe and Cardinal to support their cause. Should’ve cultivated more cooperation over the years.

No it’s the opposite in my experience. My kid’s school needed trailers for classrooms when not technically over enrollment.

No skin on the game. Just an observer of then and now. Nottingham is facing a massive uphill battle both as a policy matter and in winning hearts and mind.

Use of trailers doesn’t always mean over capacity. Just means the space is being used for different purposes. If trailers is what you are trying to get people worked up over, good luck. Trailers have been a fixture at Tuckahoe forever. No one is afraid of them.
Anonymous
Their school is t closing permanently! But other kids who need a temporary school will be needing it! While their own kids have to walk!! To another nearby school! That is also currently under capacity!!! But not as under capacity as their own school which had fewer than 400 kids in it last year!! OH THE HUMANITYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!

Overcapacity means a strain on resources. All resources for all students. Lunch schedules, specials, special Ed, buses and yes, class sizes. Don’t be obtuse.

OMG minor inconvenience. Sure, Jan.

Wait until you see the inconvenience of schlepping from one extreme of the county to the other at rush hour to pick up from extended day. Good luck to you.

I am pleased to be the first to tell you that the distance between Nottingham and either Discovery or Jamestown is not a schlep.

No, it’s the distance between whatever school in south Arlington you are renovating for multiple years and Nottingham. Good luck trying to figure that one out if you are a working parent. Thus the comment from one end of the county to the other.

It's most likely one year, not multiple years.

How do you know? Where does APS say this?

It's likely one year for a given community to be bused up, not several. Emptying a building for renovation should enable APS to complete the renovation in one year. The PP referred to "whatever school in south Arlington you are renovating for multiple years" suggesting parents need to figure out unbearable logistics for multiple years. I don't think that's going to be the case.

That's not what the school board has says - they can't level and rebuild a school in one school year. This is basically new construction, not a remodel.

I'm not aware of any school they are planning to tear down and rebuild. I think it's more major renovations and maintenance that can't be completed over a summer.

Anonymous wrote:FWIW: McK/ now ATS was under reno for 1.5 years and kept the kids in it which was a PIA. Gym Trailer! No parking! Chaos!

For the S. ARL ppl who might end up in, what is, horribly located swing space, maybe ask for an extended day bus back to original school or a parking lot near it.

Agree. I suggested APS could probably provide late bus transportation. But of course the people who know better responded immediately with a lesson on how not everyone picks up their kids at the same time from extended day. So what? A bus can pick up everyone at 5:30 and drop them off at 6:00 somewhere at/nearby their regular neighborhood school.

I think that was a choice because they had the trailers anyway. Why use-up the whole capacity when you already have trailers and can spread out a little?

I mean if those schools want their kids to be in trailers in a couple years then sure sit and say nothing and gloat at N'ham's misfortune.
