At some point, being over capacity could become a safety issue -- like if there's a fire and the hallways are jam packed. The cheapest option would be to shift the students to a school that can handle additional students.

Stop building houses in saturated areas. They just added some near WSHS. Put new houses in a different district.

The School Board has no control over where houses get built. If they had any brains they prioritize capital investments in the areas with the greatest need for additional capacity but they aren’t wired to be nimble or think strategically.

School capacity is often considered by the Board of Supervisors when they are presented with plans for a big development. The problem is they kind of suck at analyzing how many kids will end up at the local schools and which schools (elementary, middle, or HS) when a big apartment development is approved. Either they way under estimate or way over estimate. I don’t think too many K-12 kids live in the big apartment complex across the street from Springfield Mall, but a ton of kids live in the older, low rise apartments around Springfield Plaza.

The BOS disclaims responsibility for schools and the SB disclaims responsibility for development. The coordination between the BOS and SB is superficial and perfunctory, and there is no accountability because we have one-party rule in county government. It’s made Fairfax an increasingly lousy place to live.

Even in the Lewis pyramid there are overcrowded ES. Crestwood is reliant on trailers for example. There’s moves to make to reduce elementary school crowding within the same pyramids in a lot of cases.

These schools have trailers because the class sizes for classes full of ESOL kids are so small.

Who cares?!?

Race should be irrelevant to this discussion.

It's going to be Hunt Valley, folks. No way to get around that. Most of the neighborhoods (if not all) that border the parkway after Gambrill, go to Lewis.

Bulllshit

Hunt Valley is the farthests neighborhood away from.Lewis, with the exception of Sangster.

Keene Mill is the closest.

Just saying this over and over isn't going to make it true. Saratoga goes to Lewis. The other neighborhoods around Gambrill go to South County.

Saratoga Mom REALLY wants to.make it true.

Pretty sure I said border the parkway....look at a map.

You just live on the wrong side of the parkway. It's ok. Your kids will be grandfathered in.

No they don't.

Most of the neighborhoods along that stretch of the parkway go to South County and Lake Braddock.

Can you imagine having a junior have to switch high schools? All the work and bonding with sports, music, theater, etc. not to mention their course selections mapped out for their most important academic year. That guy sounds nuts.

It completely screws up college applications for any students who have to transfer.

No leadership positions. No team captain roles. Disruption to sports teams. No class offices.

Different class options.

Different levels in the music programs.

Etc, etc.

What a stupid, selfish move by McDaniels.

Thank you to all of you who voted for him without paying attention to anything that came out of his mouth.

Rising seniors would be grandfathered. Rising juniors would have two years at the new high school.

No kid transferring Junior yewr wis going to get elected to any school or club leadership position, get picked for team captain, be put on ther top relay team, etc, etc.

McDaniel is basically screwing over every last kid who wants to apply to college by not allowing the high school students to grandfather.

If they wre putting out a Q&A, then rest assured the schools are picked and it is a done deal.

They will release in late June/early July like the school board always does when they are trying to sneak a bad idea through without parents noticing until it is too late.

ANYONE who has a school with a GreatSchools rating of 7 or higher is probably screwed. Even if they don't move you to a new school, they'll move other kids in to make sure all schools get a nice even 5. Property values will take a proportionate hit.

I keep hearing this from you(?), but I’m not sure. People aren’t having many kids these days and they don’t usually relocate to this area without some cushy job. I don’t think schools are a top issue for most people around here.

You haven't met many people here, have you Kyle?

Hunt Valley brings what Lewis needs.

So are you saying decisions should be based proximity to the high school? Western Langley pyramid fervently disagrees.

This was refuted yesterday and you just ignored it, so I will repeat it for you. Langley less than twenty minutes, Herndon high about fifteen. Turns out there’s no easy way to get across 7.

Advocate all you want, but do it honestly, because bus time is not a real reason for that school to be redistricted.

What time did you take your estimate and did you account for stops along the route?

7/7:30. Stops along the route would cancel each other out when comparing times. I travel Georgetown Pike for work frequently and the only issue that I ever encounter is a tree down or car broken down.

Travel times is a big nothing burger pretext.

Then why are people always complaining about traffic and backups on Georgetown Pike? I have heard so many people say it takes them forever to get to Cooper and Langley.

We live off Georgetown pike and I have a kid at both cooper and Langley. Cooper is so early and I never have problems driving my kid to cooper in the mornings. My Langley kid takes the bus and there is traffic but it really isn’t that bad.

The afternoon is a whole other issue. 495 bridge construction traffic can cause tons of problems. Some days I fly. Other days it can take 30 min to drive 1-2 miles.

Yup, people always complain about dismissal, afterschool activity pickups and evening meetings. It’s horrible traffic on Georgetown pike. Makes no sense to have kids from near Herndon attend Langley.

We never have a problem picking up my kid. My child plays 3 sports and the activities and sports are all at school or the away games they are bussed to. This is a lot easier than when this kid was younger and I had to drive him to practices in the middle of rush hour. We have yet to use late buses but I know they exist. My kid is also always offered a ride home by friends and teammates. I know great falls kids carpool.

I just drove a few kids home from McLean day, not so different than driving a kid home from school.

Oh please. Neither he nor any of the other candidates talked about this. They carefully never mentioned anything about this.
