and on that note, what's the least? I'm talking about people who say hi on the street and smile back, don't care about what shoes I'm wearing (or my kid, for that matter), say "it's ok" if someone apologizes for their son stepping on their coat. I've had really bad luck recently in Bethesda. Is Virginia nicer?
My Bethesda neighborhood is very friendly. Love our neighbors, kids back & forth between houses; if anyone cares (or even notices) my shoes, they have never said so. I have a good friend in McLean and sounds like her neighborhood is much the same. I know these towns get a bad rap on DCUM, but it hasn't been my experience at all.
You could move to mine, but you'd have to squish into a townhouse a couple miles outside the Beltway in Fairfax. Still, since I've had my daughter, I've discovered how friendly my neighbors are, with the exception of the annoying fresh-out-of-college renters next door.
We're happy with our nice neighbors in Kensington! (We're in CCV, but meet people on walks all the time in Rock Creek Hills and in Kensington proper.)
Glover Park in NW DC. Friendliest place I have ever lived by a long shot.
Capitol Hill... very friendly and warm.
haha - I have a similar situation in Reston. Our neighborhood is very friendly for the most part (every neighborhood has at least one odd duck, right?), and the little village centers here help to create some sense of community because you see some of the same people time and again on your walks and your store visits. |
Is there a lot of diversity in the friendly neighborhoods listed so far?
I'm interested in hearing about more friendly neighborhoods in Virginia.
Takoma Park. Very friendly and one of the most well-integrated communities I have lived in.
Reagan and Dulles - because they take you away from here.
Arlington Forest
Another Glover Parker here...by far the best, most down-to-earth, and loveliest neighborhood I've ever lived in. We know our entire block, and the kids all play together.
A third for Glover Park. Clean, safe, green and friendly. The people are congenial and relaxed if you can believe it. The traffic on the back streets isn't bad at all. It's dead quiet and peaceful at night. I literally breathe a sigh of relief as I get off the bus to return to my lovely neighborhood after work.
Honestly, I've found the friendliest neighborhoods in DC to be in lower-income areas--Columbia Heights in the mid 90s, certain parts of Petworth today, and I suspect lots of other neighborhoods I've never visited. Petworth, for example, has a lot of older homeowners who have lived in their house for decades, pride themselves on knowing everything that's going on in the neighborhood and have a passionate desire to keep things stable. They don't just say hi, they look out for my family.
