It's not an equity issue as some of you want to pretend. They just aren't getting vaccinated because they won't get vaccinated. There's no shortage of vaccines anywhere.

Any why is this? Distrust. How do you overcome distrust? Boots on the ground from people of a similar background and race, reaching out and providing facts and rationale. It’s hard work. Typing on a blog site won’t help.

DC has been doing this for months now. It's not working. The only thing that is going to work is making vaccinations completely mandatory for everything -- going out in public, receiving benefits, etc. -- just as it's mandatory for kids to be vaccinated to go to school. Unless things turn around in a hurry, we're gonna need to implement that.

A too-large subset of people both in DC and around the country simply refuses to get vaccinated, and we're all going to suffer because of it.

Can’t they just up the reward $$ and pay people to be vaccinated? A few hundred bucks per person could go a long way in some of these neighborhoods.

I heard this story yesterday and wondered if and to what extent DC and Baltimore have worked with local churches on vaccination campaigns.

With government agencies and military requiring it, I think we will see more vax in the area. But there will always be some weirdos who think their own “research” is right.

It is maddening that this even has to be done. Especially when you consider how many people were desperately waiting to get their shots last Spring.

DC has been partnering with churches and sending people door-to-door since the spring. They also did other outreach events in Ward 7 and 8 with J&J so that you only need to see people once. There's a lot of resistance to get past, but I think this is one of the areas where the city really has tried and done the right things.

Just tell the vaccine hesitant in the African-American community that “white people win” if blacks don’t get vaccinated and die.

That message will go a long way for a significant portion of the African-American community. Never underestimate the power of spite.

Didn’t residents in those wards get priority access to the vaccines before those in some other wards? Doesn’t seem like unequal access is the problem here.

I'd love to see the cell phones of residents in Ward 8. I am betting their social media is bombarded with misinformation about the vaccine.

And yes, you can target these messages down to their neighborhoods.

I’m sure most white Trump voters social media is similarly bombarded with misinformation about the vaccine. Do they also get a pass?

Here's a newsflash - all social media is bombarded with targeted information - which is considered misinformation by the other side. Neither side has a monopoly on truth and facts, and the idea that "my" side is correct and "the other" side is stupid and misinformed is the main problem here.

There is truth and there is misinformation. So, yes, one side does have a near monopoly on the facts. Spoiler alert, the Covid spread in red states is not coming from immigrants charging over the border. It's caused by people failing to get the jab.

No, sorry... but the "truth" that has been disseminated by government scientists has been shown to be in error many times during the pandemic. Fauci has admitted to using "the noble lie" to try to influence behavior. The news media and social media have consistently suppressed any questions or dissent, even from highly credentialed scientists, etc. Treatment alternatives are actively suppressed in a way that I have never seen. Side effects from Pfizer and Moderna are denied while J&J is pilloried (tick off someone at the FDA?), etc.

If you know anything about science and what it is, you will realize that much of what we are seeing is not science. It is advocacy, with a political bent. Science is humble. Science openly shares data. Science is skeptical. Science does not fear dissenting opinions. The irony is that in an effort to achieve a public good (control of the virus) through this all-out assault on scientific norms, the government and media have only blown their credibility and now will have little influence on a big chunk of the population. Speaking in more measured tones about risks and benefits, and sharing actual data would have created more trust.

Finally, when will they figure out that having Fauci speak everyday is highly unlikely to change any of the reluctant minds? It is clear that he has never darkened the door of a public health school, where we actually talk about how to educate folks on health issues. - MPH

Heh. You sound nuts, and also not very smart. You should talk to your doctor. Or, really, any doctor in America. They will tell you to go get your dumb ass vaccinated because the vaccines were have an extremely good vaccines.

Someone here sounds "not very smart" but it's not the one you think it is.

You'd be doing them a favor by staying away. No one needs or wants a "friend" like that.

It will get full approval soon, but we’re wasting precious time.

The tech may have been around for years, but no other mRNA vaccine has ever been approved. I am not saying that the vaccines are bad. I got vaccinated myself. However, overstating the case is part of what leads people to have doubts and resist.

Totally agree. Thanks for doing your part to limit the spread to willfully ignorant anti-vaxxers, PP.

Why can’t the government just ban being unvaccinated?

Problem solved!

Coercion has its limits. Beyond those limits you get strikes, demonstrations, riots. Stick with persuasion and accommodation.

I'm not vaccinated. 50 yo white female Democrat. I have medical issues, including severe allergies and an as yet undiagnosed auto immune condition, with risk of blood clots. I am doing the right thing for me, which is holding off on vaccination until I have a handle on my health.

I am in similar shoes and also had Covid. I was adamant about getting an antibody test to confirm my positive PCR was a true positive. I aslo wanted to use this instead of vaccination card like you can in other countries. I can still use it for travel overseas, but in the bizarre world of US politics I would lose my job if my employer jumps onto the bandwagon of moral superiority to require all remote workers to vaccinate. I am appalled at what is allowed to happen in the USA.

Our company required just recently that all office attending personnel must be vaxed, no alternative given for weekly testing, but it's because we are allowd to work remotely 100%, so we are considered "accommodated". But if they decide to require remote workers to do this, then it just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back and I will be surely joining some protests, as I would have nothing to lose at this point. Not able to work, not able to go to college, send kids to school, what other necessities of life will be removed? Dont' care about indoor dining or entertainment and can live without it. But if we are banned from grocery stores and airlines and public transit, etc, and especially if they do something idiotic about medical care access? There will be riots for sure.

Can you document your medical reason to not get the vaccine? What proof does your employer need? Are you encouraging other people to get vaxxed to help protect you and others in a similar situation regarding their health?
