I think people are going nuts in this country....this is getting way too much and I would not call it normal.

+1. It feels very “end of the empire”-ish. Sociologists will have a field day with it in 100 years. |
It’s the Roaring Twenties. |
Yes, instead of inventing more and more "genders"--with narrower and narrower and more exclusive definitions for each--wouldn't it be more liberating to advocate that people of either the male and female sex* could be whoever they wished to be (and with whomever they wished to be!) *Or intersexed. Point being that your genitalia, chromosomes, etc. do not have to determine or even define your identity, social or otherwise... |
Yes. But it's also about narcissism and compulsively being a victim. |

I am GenX and this all seems a little much. I wish we could revisit the issue like Marlo Thomas and friends did in 1974.check out "Free to Be...You and Me." It's a classic. It's in the top 100 best selling albums of all time, despite being 40+ years old. Buy it for your kids, please.

If this is a "trend" among young people, it just adds to the normal confusion of finding your identity while also wanting to fit in.
Using a plural pronoun in a singular context doesn't work. Being in the public eye is probably not the best place for Demi Lovato. |
Agree as well. Another middle school girl parent. We are getting a conservative in 2024 because of this Sh$%T. |
Fellow GenXer and I agree. It’s the exact opposite of the “Free to be You and Me” messaging we got as kids. |
Because young people are doing a stupid thing right now? How does that even track? Young people are constantly finding ways to annoy their elders. This one looks like a real live wire in terms of doing that. And big deal. In ten years, most of the kids who are calling themselves “trans” or “binary” will be back to calling themselves by their birth gender. The kids who are really, truly trans will have felt supported and loved and like people were trying to understand them. Oh noes. - Democrat who thinks the pronoun “they/them” is idiotic but acknowledges that there have always been non-binary and trans people. |
Except a bunch of those kids will have taken cross-sex hormones and had mastectomies, because the medical community is treating this as something requiring affirmation, rather than seeing it as the “way to annoy their elders” that many of us recognize it as. People have been booted off Twitter for the crime of “misgendering” someone. Teachers have lost their jobs for not going along with it. I wish it were being treated the same as goth or punk or hippies or emos or grunge were treated in the past. But it’s not. And that’s deeply concerning. |

There's non-binary, and then there's very damaged and attention-seeking. I think this is a case of the latter.
Not that many people are really non-binary. I'll use whatever pronouns someone wants, including Demi Lovato, but I believe they need a LOT of help. |
Whatever media choices you have been making are doing you dirty. I didn’t know much about this, but your post sounded hinky to me. Turns out, you’re wrong. Believe it or not, there are actually guidelines for who gets what (a supportive environment, puberty blockers - which are reversible and have been used for decades, hormones, gender confirmation surgery) and when. There are diagnostic criteria that have to be met; it’s not the Wild West. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/04/22/transgender-child-sports-treatments/ |
+1, from another European Immigrant/ Woman/ Democrat/ Mother of two boys |
Did you read your link? The standard of care is puberty blocking medication starting at puberty, hormone therapy (which is partially irreversible and affects fertility) starting at 14+, chest surgery after one year of testosterone therapy, etc. This is for every child at a gender clinic, not "some" children. That's shocking. |
