Summer pool rules

These pool service companies should have realized they weren't going to be able to bring in their cheap Eastern European labor for this summer and planned accordingly.

I hadn't heard of any having difficulty staffing, but it makes sense if they rely on hiring from out of the country. Thankfully ours hires locally (I am pretty sure all of our guards this year belong to our pool). Good luck.

Yes, many of these pool service companies hire lifeguards from overseas and they can not get a visa to get in to the county.

That is a shame. Why don't they hire local kids? Can they get away with paying the Eastern European kids less? When I was a teenager I lifeguarded at the pool I grew up going to. Those were some of the best summers of my life. I think it also helps the pool run more smoothly when the lifeguards enforcing the rules are the "big kids" that the younger ones look up to. I knew all the little kids at my pool and some of them would ask us to get in the pool and play with them on our breaks. We were like their older siblings in some ways.

I’m sure they would if they could, but I don’t think as many kids train to be lifeguards anymore. They’re working on things that will improve their college apps, or interning for professional jobs.

Kids really don't want lifeguard jobs these days. And lifeguard pay is shockingly low. They can make much more money doing other jobs.

Really? Lots of teens at our pool are lifeguards. My impression is it paid better than other jobs available to teens. What jobs are available to 15-17 year olds that pay better?

Same. Our pool was fully staffed months ago. My DS managed our pool last summer and is doing it again this summer. When I mentioned this thread to him he said the management company said in a recent meeting that they are fully staffed at all of their pools and are turning away applicants.

There is a lifeguard shortage because of the visas. Last two years we were able to staff our pool with local kids. This year not a single local kid wants a job. The companies can't hire local kids because their parents don't force them to work when they hit 15. It is crazy to me.

Our pool is run by NV pools. It seems they are fully staffed and I don’t know if they have ever gotten foreign kids for the job.

I don’t get kids that don’t want to work. I guess many are busy with year round sports and school so it doesn’t fit in life. But lifeguarding in general has got to be one of the easiest teen jobs. They spend most of their time sitting in the guard area talking or reading or being bored.

Our HOA’s pool is opening on Memorial Day weekend with some restrictions still in place - not on capacity, but they don’t want you to order food delivery to the pool and no guests are allowed. They use Crystal Aquatics. No problems finding lifeguards as far as I know. The lifeguards have always been HS/college age kids in the area so we haven’t had to rely on foreign labor.

No food delivery seems odd at this point. Did they say why?

Lol this is an improvement over where they were to start, which was reserved times and spaces in the pool, pool closes every 2 hours for “cleaning,” and no pool furniture will be available. I don’t know why they’re clinging to some restrictions but not others. I wonder if maybe there are some staffing shortages and they want to concentrate on having enough employees to do the actual work of lifeguarding vs. having an extra employee or two around for taking out extra trash, cleaning tables after people leave their pizza crusts behind, stuff like that.

Our HOA uses Nv pools and we just got a list of rule for the summer-they are requiring masks but only for kids under 12, and using a reservation system. This seems ridiculous to me given all the restrictions will be lifted the weekend the pool opens. (And everyone over 12 who is unvaccinated just gets a pass but little kids all have to wear masks?)

I can't get over the absurdity of making small children put a mask on, walk into the pool, and take the mask off. It's outside.
