How bad is your APS back to school experience?

Yes, my 7th grader commented on how happy the teachers were to see the kids. ❤️

So sad. I'm temped to transition her back to DL. What is the point of them being there if the teachers aren't.

This!! First day (and possibly last) for my senior. She texted me “this is horrible. I will not be doing hybrid next week”. Sounds like it’s better for the younger kids but it’s miserable at the HS level.

All but one of my sophomore’s teachers are in person. He’s happy, and other parents I’ve spoken to have happy high schoolers too. Not saying your daughter’s experience wasn’t awful, just that the awful isn’t universal at the HS level.

I agree. Sophomore DS actually had a great first week back. He's not a super social kid but he was still really glad to be back in the building and be with classmates, even if it was just a handful in some classes. Says the teachers have been really welcoming and making a big effort to get this all to work well for them.

Because so much of the rhetoric this year became “teachers don’t care about kids / teachers want school closed” I think a lot of people forget that we do this job because WE LITERALLY LOVE BEING WITH THE KIDS. Whatever age group we work with, we do it because we get to be with them. Yes we are happy they are back! Yes we wish they all could be! Yes we are dying for 5 day fall with a normal classroom full of bustling young people again! You have no idea how badly we have missed their presence and how much more fulfilling this job is when they are with us.

what's the deal with all these MS and HS APS teachers remaining remote? It seems like a huge problem and I thought APS didn't grant many remote teacher requests? Will this remain in the fall?

I'm guessing whatever personal situation they are in now won't change in the fall (assuming they are fully vaccinated now). How does this play out?

The few that I know about are taking leave without pay once the school finds a qualified sub. They are doing the school a favor by continuing to teach remotely. And I hope they don’t, since it’s almost 4Th quarter and I’d rather my kid be taught by a great teacher remotely than some barely qualified sub. The ones I know have child care issues and weren’t granted permission to work from home permanently. That will likely be resolved next year when APS and Fairfax go 5 days for all. So yeah, I’d rather they stay remote and I don’t think it’ll be an issue for most next year.

I think the ones waiting for a decision on their remote requests don’t have to come in. No idea how many of those there are. A PP also indicated that principals are allowed to give however much leeway they want. No idea if that’s true.

They were not approved, they are required to take leave. But there’s no long-term substitutes available so the agreed to remain virtual until the substitutes can be found.

Totally agree! Give the kids some consistency.

+1

I hope my kids don't lose their great remote teachers!

I'm hoping that they will be in-person students with in-person teachers in the fall.

This is not going to be as good as school NOT during a pandemic. Nothing is.

But if Catholic school appeals to you, go for. I'd rather have my kids educated by professionals.

I wouldn’t say catholic school teachers aren’t professionals but any public school is better than my kids learning Catholicism and a skewed curriculum. JMO.

My senior has a remote teacher that wants to and is ready to come back but can’t because APS says there’s not enough space.

Your senior or the teacher has something wrong. If a teacher is on P1 they CANNOT come back unless they got their doctor to write another note rescinding the need to stay home for health concerns. If they do that, the teacher would of course be able to come back. There is space because they would just take the place of whatever proctor is there. There is no such thing as no space for staff of the school. So either your kid got something mixed up, or the teacher is leaving some stuff out or wants to come in but won’t rescind the P1 status. The story as is isn’t accurate.

Plenty of subs are qualified. I hope you don’t get one of them.
