ANC3D Discussion on Foxhall Elementary / Old Hardy

Anonymous
The FCCA is holding a (virtual) meeting tomorrow evening (Wednesday at 7pm) to discuss the GDS project. Mary Cheh and some ANC commissioners will apparently attend the meeting. The anti Foxhall ES contingent (which is probably the same thing as the FCCA for all intents and purposes) have sent a message out asking that members of the community attend to voice their concerns to Mary about the proposed new schools (especially Foxhall ES). Please feel free to attend and voice your support for the school. Link to the meeting is here: https://foxhall.org/

I noticed on the meeting agenda that they plan to limit comments to those living within a quarter mile of the site. Because no one else matters, I guess.

GDS announced today that they have completed the sale of their lower campus to DCPS.

Where do you see that? They can go ahead and try to do that if they want and see what happens to their meeting . . .

Why hasn’t DCPS looked into how many students attend Ward 3 schools, Shepherd and Bancroft that are OOB? Once those figures come in, then look to see what percentage of those kids would eliminate the overcrowding of those schools? If it’s a significant amount, then those families would need to lottery for Deal, Hardy and Wilson.

This seems like a simple task that should be understandable to those families OOB. I say this as an OOB parent who kids attend Bancroft. I guess my kids would have to attend MacFarland if faced with this decision.

The short answer is they prefer crowding to lack of diversity.

Thanks. I assume that they'll be asking for addresses as a criteria to speak. Well, in preparation, let's put the measuring tool on Google Maps to use to find some addresses that fit that criteria . . .

The Old Hardy deal -- like the Jelleff deal before it -- came straight out of the Mayor's office. At that level it's one government.

Ok. So the same way the dept of transportation isn’t going to pay a $1 mil to pave and maintain a random few blocks in ward 3 to make some bikers happy with another vanity trail, they are going to build a new school via school facilities in ward 2/3 for kids from other parts of the city to come to because they want a half decent education — ie families who vote for the mayor and aren’t going to be pulling their kids for private school by middle school anyway (including all the developers).

Get a clue.

I think the poster was trying to make an easily refutable point about the political economy of public spending in DC but I'm not entirely sure because s/he doesn't seem to know how to string together words to construct an interpretable sentence.

The mayor knows people in other parts of the city want to send their kids to a ward 2 or 3 school. And so many families in ward 2 or 3 (especially influential and rich ones) will pay for other options (and get sweetheart use of Public facilities like jellef). So building more schools in ward 2 and 3 is the plan.
Can’t string a sentence but can win lobbying battles. Anyone planning to go to the fox hall meeting would be better off watching Netflix and chill. It’s a done deal, they are just checking a box but letting community members vent and yell at them for a while.

Fair enough. Sorry for being rude.

I can't use DCUM apparently. Sorry for being rude. Your points are sound.

Anyone seen the 4500 block of Q Street recently? The NIMBYs are putting on a regular art show along the park fences.

It's really atrocious and unwelcoming. We went this weekend to check out the new rec center with our kid and those signs are everywhere. It feels like you're being monitored by the neighbors.

I may just go back and remove the signs on public property. I especially hate the signs they put on the median island along MacArthur Blvd. It feels so icky, discriminatory, and unwelcoming.
