“That’s my dogs name”

Anonymous
My mom had a doctorate in English Literature and she named me after her favourite author.

When I was a teenager my mom's old roommate from grad school came to visit for the first time. She showed me photos of their apartment, and my mom's ferret was in most of the shots. The ferret had my name. Or I have the ferret's name.

I still think my mom knew it was odd to name her daughter after her pet ferret (which she never mentioned to me). That is why she never told me herself.

In fact, I might start telling people my dog has the same name as their kid (I don’t have a dog) to gauge their reaction.

LOL, agree!

We are part of a bigger friend group, so it's not like my kid will see this dog a lot. But it's still really irritating to me. I'd rather have a friend name their kid the same name, but a dog feels insulting.

I actually sort of hate it when people use common names for their animals in general. Lets keep it to Sparky and Snowflake.

I wouldn’t like you I think. My dogs have been Keith, John, and Craig.

I named my kid first!!! If the dog had been named first, fine. If you knew a toddler named Craig at the time you got your dog, would you still have used it? That's my main beef. She knew it was my kid's named and still used it for her dog. We may get a gerbil and I think I'll name it after her . No big deal right?!

I actually sort of want to meet a dog named Barbara.

NOBODY CARES.

I think it’s because my kids’ names are mostly ones that are such boring human names that you’d be surprised to find them on a dog (e.g., no one has a dog named Matthew).

I am
Certain there is a dog named matthew. Always love a dog named Dave. Such a great name for a dog. Cool, easygoing.

I know a cat named Paul. It's just a name, nothing to be worked up over.

THats amazing. The author made a huge impact on her. I hope you see the beauty in this....and hilarity.

It’s not a big deal!! The fact that you’re hung up on this is weird.

My name is Sophie. A co-worker, whom I knew for about 5 years at that point, bought a new dog and named it Sophie. She hid the name from me for the first few months. I finally figured it out during a hushed conversation between her and another co-worker. Initially, I was livid! Then... I got over it. Life is too short. Now, I think it's pretty funny.

Another funny thing is both of our daughters have the same name. I had my daughter first - by about 5 years.

He was so embarrassed to tell me this when we first started dating

Ok, this is hilarious!!!

This is a great story! Did she give her old roomie the side eye for telling you this???

I adopted an older dog who had the exact same name as ... ME!

I didn't want people to think I was a complete narcissist and named my dog after myself so I changed the name to something which sounded similar but was not a human name.

It’s like saying, “you named your child a dog’s name.”

Why would you be livid?? Sophie is a very common dog’s name. You sound unhinged.

I was coming here to reply something similar. My people would laugh at this. Someone who is offended by this would not be good friend material for me.

Um, did you miss the part where I got over it and think it's funny. You sound unhinged and a little impulsive in your response. And predictable.

Your mom did not name her daughter after her ferret. She named her ferret and her daughter after her favorite author. When she named the ferret, she had no idea that she would have a daughter later, so it made sense to use the name then.
