I’m seriously asking.

I was sad when my dad died, but if a celebrity death affected me it was truly for not being able to selfishly enjoy more of their work.

Nothing seriously wrong but you probably lack empathy ... you probably can muster sympathy.

NP. But I agree with PP. Celebrity deaths affect me not at all. I have plenty of empathy and sympathy for people in my life. I just don’t put celebrities on a pedestal.

I don't put them on a pedestal either, but find death by suicide incredibly sad whether I know the victim or not.

NP here, I don't see it as a pedestal either. I see it as a way to mourn someone who touched your life. Just because you don't know someone personally does not mean they can't touch your life.

I'm not really affected emotionally because I didn't know these people and that's just not how my personality works, but I do agree with Natasha Richardson in that her death affected how I think about concussion risk and the signs to look for (and that the damage isn't instantaneous and the fall doesn't have to be from a tall height or movement to do damage).

I mourn complete strangers, like a young girl in my sons class freshman year. It does not mean I put them on a pedestal.

You probably think you have empathy but it’s probably sympathy.

It’s fine, it’s not a character flaw nor is it a competition.

Not everybody is built the same.

Empathy refers to feeling what another person is feeling. Sympathy means you understand what the other person is feeling even without feeling it yourself. Compassion means your feelings have prompted you to take action to relieve the suffering of another person.

Princess Diana just from the sheer shock of it. It was the first time that I realized how people could actually believe the "Elvis is still alive" conspiracies because I actually thought for a split second, "I wonder if she faked it just to get away from the paparazzi to live her life."

Robin Williams because I just adored him and he seemed like a sweet, tortured soul.

Anthony Bourdain for the same reasons.

David Bowie. Didn't see that one coming and he died very close to when my dad passed away.

Many of these deaths should have the same effect, raising awareness of death by suicide, depression, colon cancer, routine heart surgery, car accident, drug overdose (accidental or not), AIDS, COVID, etc etc.

Philip Seymour Hoffman. Such a talent and such a loss.

Bea Arthur -- actually all, of the Golden Girls. Seemed like the end of an era. At least Betty White still survives.

Anthony Bourdain.

Whitney Houston.

Farrah Fawcett.

Amy Winehouse.

I was shocked when Chester Bennington committed suicide. For YEARS he said he was depressed and people thought it was a rockstar affectation, but the guy was serious.

I was about 12 when Elvis died and I remember exactly where I was when I found out.
