Honest to god, they look like they should be playing in the 21 division. Oldest looking group of “sophomores” I have ever seen. It is so over the top they can’t even hide it.

Does anyone know the percentage of holdbacks or Mater Dei alums on that team?

80% have either repeated or were delay entry. The team has over 10 MD.

Thank you. Proves my hunch correct. With IL now reporting birthdays when kids commit, it all comes out anyway. Will be interesting to track development of that team over next year or 2 ie is it skill or age that have made them good.

Most of the DC Dogs kids are DI players. Several of high level DI players.

Doesn't matter and the subject has been discussed ad nauseum. Regardless of the sport, coaches recruit the best players for that class and pay little attention to potential. This is a very good team and those players would be the better players on most rosters.

Don’t disagree. But clearly holding back helps being a “better player” or people wouldn’t do it. You have roughly half to 2/3,s of the top 10 2022,s are holdbacks; some double. So it works. Imagine holding back for lacrosse purposes and your kid is still just average. If you aren’t a top 50-100 player and your a holdback, than you just aren’t any good. Sucks for you. Bad decision by Mom/Dad.

And to be clear before everyone replies with the “it’s for educational purposes”, I am strictly talking about on the field as I am responding to the comment if bring “better players. “

About 70% of those kids are held back one year. 2 of them are held back 2 years.

Can you imagine holding back your child for athletics and your child still is just sort of ok. Like not great, but decent. That would be a fun dinner conversation..."Dad, I am a 19 year old Senior and I have committed to play lacrosse at Lafayette...awesome..."

The holdback whiners rarely have their facts right. Not even close to “half” the IL top 10 of 2022 are holdbacks, depending on your cutoff date, and to argue cutoff dates is to argue a matter of weeks, not years. And the top kids are going to be top of the class and dominate whether they hold back or not. Holding back might help the #800 kid move up to #500. But the top 50 kids are going to be top of their own age group, the year above, or the year below. Whiners who look at top teams with top talent whine “holdback” without having any idea what they are talking about. It’s a convenient excuse for your kid and his team not being as competitive.

This is just not true. Sept 1 is the date; it’s really not up to interpretation. I mean seriously, the top 3 kids are holdbacks and the top goalie was a Fall 02 birthday. My kid is a 21 D1 commit and played against 3 of them in 6/7th grade. They were decent, but not spectacular. We kicked their butts at Koopers. Spallina always played “up”, by grade, but was old for his grade.

Of course, I would ask if it doesn’t help, as you contend, why do so many kids do,it?

You mean Lafayette College, the incredibly well respected academic institution?

Yes, I do. Cause we are talking about lacrosse not academics. Pretty sure nobody is thinking "I will hold my kid back, pay an extra year of private school...so his grades get good enough to get into Lafayette and happen to be good enough to play lacrosse."

Yes, being held back is an advantage on the lacrosse field. So is having an older brother who plays and doesn't take it easy on the younger kid. So is having a father who coaches or played.

Instead of constantly complaining about holdbacks, why don't some of these parents get together and create their own league where all the kids only compete against other kids who were born within the exact same month/year as them, and are also the same height, weight, and speed?

It would be a truly even playing field and then *maybe* their kid could finally be the star! Probably not though.

Half the parents in that league would likely start a thread here complaining about the kids with older brothers having an unfair advantage and make snotty comments about the better players going to 'secondary' D1 schools like Lafayette. "Can you imagine?"

Not to get too side-tracked about Lafayette because that obviously was a random example, but it shows the cluelessness of certain people on the board. LaFayette is a Division 1 program, and anybody who makes the varsity at ANY Division 1 program (or Division 2 or 3 for that matter) is an extremely elite player relative to their peers in HS and youth lacrosse. Nobody who is "just sort of ok" at lacrosse, holdback or not, would get anywhere near the roster at a division 1 program.
