Everyone constantly calls out the Kardashians for cultural appropriation. And they don’t even pretend they’re black - just pick and choose what they like from the culture while talking about their Armenian heritage.

This woman’s actions have taken opportunities from actual minorities.

This. Her faculty position was a diversity spot. She's also won awards meant for POC.

Ok, so what do you suggest? Jail time?

PP. She should lose her ill-gotten tenured faculty position, for starters.

Fine, then just leave her alone. Let her move on and get the help she obviously needs. No point in bullying her.

Oh please, this woman’s an obvious sociopath. She’s probably lying about the mental illness and childhood trauma too. She was writing pieces online pretending to be a black Latina right up until she was about to be exposed earlier this week.

Ok...so what should the consequences be? Fire her. Should she pay a hefty fine? Community service? House arrest? Jail time? Or should we just bully her indefinitely?

I thought she had tenure?

Yes, so what should her consequences be? Couldn’t she still do her job as a white woman now? I am confused.

You are suggesting he planned for this years ago? Or that he manufactured the years of evidence? Have you checked for aliens in your attic?

I have zero evidence he has any involvement. But yes, he is capable of pulling off a multiple year con job. He hires conservative activists to infiltrate progressive organizations and Dem campaigns all the time. Do you know that James O’Keefe’s organization takes in $10-20m per year of dark money donations from conservative mega donors? He has the means to pull this off.

I’d like to hear more from Jessica Krug. Somehow she was able to hide her true origin story and get around background checks. Something isn’t adding up and that’s why I’m inclined to think that something more nefarious is happening. Her case hits all the conservative talking points about race, identity, academia, etc. This case is almost custom made to dominate conservative news cycle for a month; it’s an intersection of every conservative grievance, It all seems too convenient.

DP but what do you think background checks do?? They don’t go check parental race to find any discrepancy.

She claims to be a NY’er from the hood, but she’s actually a Jewish woman from Kansas. How the f#ck is that not flagged in a background check? Her origin story would’ve been caught in a legit background check.

Like I said, something else is happening here.

NP. 100% agree. People are naive.

If someone tells me they are Latina/White/AA/Asian, I’m not going to question it. 98% of Americans are good natured and will accept at face value. We are a country of immigrants filled with centuries of interracial relations (both consensual and nonconsensual). Mixed race ancestry is NORMAL in our country. Even people who think they are white will likely have other races/ethnicities mixed in their DNA and won’t discovered it until they do a genetic test.

She essentially took advantage of an American cultural practice where we let people live the identity they were told from birth. She took advantage of everyone - fellow academics, students, employers, friends - who just accepted her for who she was. She has done irreparable damage to institutional trust and POC who are trying to compete at elite levels and who often don’t get a fair shake. It’s disgusting.

-A White Man

100% agree with this too.

She got away with it for so long because white people are the ones who decide who gets tenure, hold the grant purse strings, etc. You think any white person wanted to be the one who said “Hey, we don’t think you’re a real Latina”? No. It was easier to go along to get along. If anything, white people in academic administration were incentivized to hire her because she checked the boxes. The people incident really displays how white academic administration is and how it also needs to diversify.

Most rational people who want to pass as another race/ethnicity would do it quietly. What does she do? She continually doubles down and becomes more egregious. The ridiculous, exaggerated fake accent. Makeup to darken her skin tone. The awful hair dye. Dressing provocatively in a stereotypical manner of an NYC Latina “from the hood.” She leaned into it, trying to get attention and push the boundaries of decency. It feels so Trump-like in its audacity. She was basically trolling polite people to call her out in an effort to paint herself as a victim.

It would not surprise me at all if this woman held hard-right conservative political views and was doing this to just troll POC in academia. It’s too nefarious.

Nope. I ran in some overlapping circles in social media and she seemed to be a true believer. She was a radical and did this on purpose. Heck, she wrote books that demonstrated a sophisticated analysis of these issues. This was deceptive but she actually is smart and sophisticated and a good writer and academic. Let's have a sophisticated conversation about race and deception and why, but she wasn't a Trump style grifter.

It certainly has the smell and texture of a cheap distraction to try and shift the energy of all the discourse around race.

The academics who were about to expose her chose the timing. I agree that the timing is bad, but she was about to be exposed.

However, she has an underlying integrity issue. As a professional, that's really all you have no matter how well reasoned your arguments.

I met her once. Apparently she commuted from New York. Maybe stayed here 2-3 days/week.

Absolutely. Just saying she's not a closet Republican. You can't argue that long and that hard for radical politics in ways you don't have to 24/7 and have it be a total ruse. She is clearly deceptive, messed up, cooked professionally, but I doubt she is actual a trump in academic's clothing based on the hundreds and thousands of things she wrote and didn't have to on social media.

She should be removed from her tenure track job, of course, and be forced to pay back any grants she received.

One of her white neighbors is quoted in this article -- Krug allegedly called her "white trash" for running in the neighborhood:

"Her current neighbor, Anna Anderson, told the DailyMail.com that Krug would call her 'white trash' and tell Anderson she was 'gentrifying' the neighborhood by going running.

Following a dispute over their bikes Anderson said Krug asked her: 'Do you know what the police do to black people like me?'

Anderson told DailyMail.com: 'She called me white trash, which is ironic.'

Are some of you posters actually thinking this is some Right-wing conspiracy? You also need help, like Krug.

“ It has since emerged that Krug, who lives in East Harlem, New York and has previously described her as an 'unrepentant and unreformed child of the hood', went to the exclusive Barstow school in Kansas City where she was said to have identified as a white, Jewish girl.”
