Langley/McLean/Marshall Boundaries

Why can’t Langley attract enough kids? Are there issues with the school or neighborhoods?

Just a thought, but perhaps more parents do value SES diversity these days.

We were at both those games with friends and what your clip doesn't show is how rude McLean was to the Langley visitors. All sorts of profane chants directed at them. Not welcoming in the least, and if that's their version of "school spirit," count us out.

You must be joking. The Langley and McLean kids acted like they do at every rivalry game. Or almost: the Langley kids didn't do thousands of dollars of damage punching holes in the McLean bleachers like they did a few years ago.

There were large student sections from both schools (Langley in white and McLean in black): https://twitter.com/jonroetman/status/1083875471971008512

When the Langley students walked out towards the end, the McLean students waved "bye" at them and some Langley kids responded by flipping the bird: https://twitter.com/jonroetman/status/1083907510527029248

My advice is that you not attend Langley/McLean games in the future if you can't handle losing or rowdy kids. You'll probably want to avoid Robinson/Lake Braddock, Yorktown/W-L, and Centreville/Westfield games too.

I’m not sure what you mean by “can’t attract enough kids.” People move into this area specifically so that their kids can attend Langley. That there aren’t as many kids as some of the overcrowded schools is a plus, not a negative.

McLean kids weren’t innocently “waving bye” - spare us. They were flipping off Langley kids too. I was at that game. Langley was responding to the rudeness of McLean. Please don’t pretend McLean kids aren’t equally rude during Langley/McLean games. Anyone who’s ever attended one knows you’re lying.

The "monthly membership" reports on the FCPS website go back to 2006-07. They show Langley's current enrollment is the lowest it's been at any time since 2006. Why is that when the county as a whole is growing?

I also don't understand why FCPS added seats at Langley when there was a greater need for them at other schools.

I was at the game and did not see any McLean kids "flipping off" Langley kids. They chanted the things the winning side chants: "I believe that we will win" and "nah nah nah nah, hey hey-ey goodbye." The Langley kids kids were flipping the bird on their way out while the McLean side celebrated.

It's mostly just kids being kids, but only Langley kids have had to repay thousands of dollars in damage to McLean. This was a while back and the Langley principal made the kids write letters apologizing.

Also it was only some Langley kids, not most of them.

I was at this game as well and the McLean kids most definitely were flipping off Langley. They were also chanting their ridiculous "Silver Spoon" chant, directed at Langley. Real mature.

OMG! "Silver Spoon"! I also heard "Daddy's Money," plus "Traitor" directed towards the player who transferred from McLean to Langley. As welll as Langley kids chanting "Let's Play Football" to remind McLean that Langley beat them.

Of course it's immature, they're in high school. But I didn't see any McLean kids flipping off Langley. That's what you do when you're losing. And if "Silver Spoon" gets under your skin, maybe you need to ask FCPS to add a little diversity to your school.

DP- what is there to understand? That school doesn’t have much turn over. Those are big beautiful homes that people stay in. The population ages and it can be decades before another student bubble. It doesn’t have a bunch of cheap apts that see new tenants every few years.

Sounds like they shouldn't move too many kids to Langley or it will end up really overcrowded when the older people finally sell. It must be tough for some to maintain those big properties as they age.

There was a work session on the draft CIP yesterday. Jane Strauss asked the School Board to authorize the inclusion of a reference to a limited boundary study, possibly to take effect in the fall of 2020, that would move the apartments and townhouses in Tysons currently zoned to Spring Hill/Longfellow/McLean to Cooper/Langley. Except for Ilryong Moon, the other SB members seemed hostile to the idea of any amendment to the draft FY 2020-24 CIP to explicitly mention this. They didn't rule out the possibility of moving forward with a study after further discussions in February and March, and Karen Corbett-Sanders told Strauss that not mentioning a possibly boundary change in the CIP wouldn't preclude the initiation of a boundary study later this year.

There was a lot of talk about trying to come up with a "holistic" approach to boundary changes at upcoming meetings, and even a possible county-wide redistricting to be developed over the next several years. Of course, they haven't done anything like that for decades, and the actual responsibility for making any changes would then probably fall on the next School Board elected in the fall of 2019.

It sounded like Jane Strauss may have waited too late before raising her proposal with the other Board members, and the others were caught by surprise. Or maybe the other Board members were just resistant to another Board member actually trying to get something done when they weren't ready to make similar proposals. It was fairly painful to watch.

NP. With this in mind... what is the point of the meeting on Thursday at 7pm at McLean HS? Is there anything material they plan to discuss on this topic if they are merely brainstorming the possibility of a "limited" boundary study even amongst the SB members? I'd have to change my work schedule so I am just trying to determine if there is an actual discussion plan for this meeting.

This is 16:28. Strauss said during the work session that she has meetings scheduled at both McLean and Langley this week. I assume she wants to say "she's working on it" and share what she has in mind. Not everyone pays attention to what gets said during School Board work sessions. She won't be in any position this week to speak for the entire School Board, which basically told her to slow down (ironic, since the enrollment trends at Langley and McLean have been evident for years and McLean is very crowded now).

Unless you had something specific you wanted to ask her or say in public (i.e., "so exactly how many more trailers will McLean be getting next fall" or "I'm really disappointed that you didn't find a way to get McLean included on the list of high schools getting additions"), you could probably skip it. There will undoubtedly be a lot of talk about things you already know, and she'll probably say it didn't make sense to do anything until the renovations at Langley were finished or almost complete.
