4 Potomac kids did attend last year, and so far 3 have gotten in this year. That is true. |
Congratulations to your daughter! Would you be willing to disclose what group chat it is? |
The admissions officers of these universities admit themselves that they can fill these classes many times over...so get over yourself |
I also believe your kid is a legacy and URM, correct? |
Get over the URM jealousy people. It is not a good look. |
But it wasn’t funny as 2.5 mil is chump change. Are you a high schooler? |
Yes, the ENTIRE CLASS is URM. 100 %. That’s why your kid is going to state school. |
When kids get into a school they have a group chat for them on some kind of social media. You can’t get in and you can’t spy on it- what’s wrong with you?? |
Is it possible that you are this dense? $2.5 million is what was REPORTED. Someone even provided a link for you. If he had paid $5 million that's what would have been included. It was a 'joke' in the sense that it was not true. Not meant to be 'ha-ha' funny. |
It is a managed lottery. I've interviewed for a HYPS school for over 20 years (probably about 75 kids total), and from what I've seen, which admittedly is a very small sample, you can establish a bar over which people need to be. However, of the group that is over the bar, and it's a significant portion, I see no rhyme or reason for why one kid got in over the other. With the qualifications of kids these days, it is impossible to make a meaningful distinction between them. And I don't believe for a second that squishy criteria like that cited above is that differentiator. The admissions office cannot determine that any of their applicants, whom they will likely never meet, are happy, self-assured or non-competitive. (I also don't believe that 'non-competitive' is a word I would ever associate with anyone attending any Ivy League school or equivalent). This is a human process and, as such, inherently unreliable. A tremendous amount of luck is involved. If it wasn't, you'd see the same kid who got into Cornell get into Penn and vice versa. That doesn't happen on a consistent basis. If your kid got in, great. That's wonderful news. Celebrate your good fortune, because for most kids, some amount of good fortune is involved. |
I agree wholeheartedly. My DC is at an IVY and some of the parents I have met that preen over themselves and their kids - i wish I could tell them it is luck. One parent at Princeton even told me that their younger daughter didn’t want to apply to Princeton as their elder is there so that is why she is at Dartmouth! I was going to puke! |
Agree. I also interviewed for many years and it seemed more like a lottery than anything else. |
I'm not sure Harvard is for "ordinary high achieving kids". More like "extraordinary" high achieving kids. |

+1 |
Thanks to everyone who posted admissions and stats, and congrats to your kids! My DD will probably apply early to an ivy, and, while she is ina great magnet program w/ great grades, a state level EC and a state (maybe national) level EC, she is not an athlete, nor is she a legacy. It is useful to know if certain institutions prioritize certain "hooks" in the early phase.
Anyway, appreciate the info, and congrats again! |
