I completely agree that some shouldn't be in mainstream school because they can be a danger when acting out of control. However, some parents don't want to accept this & would rather put teachers, counselors, & other children at risk. Working with children is demanding in every way. I was proud to see some of you concerned not only with the safety of the students, but also, those who work with them everyday. It can be discouraging to be in such a tough field & feel like parents & students don't appreciate you or care about your safety. I'm obviously not saying people shouldn't be concerned with their children's safety, but I am saying you should also be concerned with the safety of those who are serving you & your children & hold your kids accountable when they are wrong. Teach them to respect everyone in the building, their peers, teachers, counselors, janitorial staff, & administrators. Everyone should be working together for the benefit of the children.

OMG. Do your freakin' job and follow the IEP.

Um, what? Who wasn't doing their job?

"some shouldn't be in mainstream school" is the big tell.

Dogs should NOT be allowed on the Janney grounds. Stop the gamesmanship!

What has been resolved? Can you be more specific?

OMG. Do your freakin' job and teach your child it is not okay to hit, kick, punch, bite, threaten, or otherwise harm other students or adults. Having an IEP DOES NOT give a child permission to be violent.

Case is still being investigated.

The staffer works for both Janney and JAC and each is doing their own investigation and will make their own decision about any consequences.

Apparently there is a clear video of the entire incident but Janney cannot share the video with JAC which is kind of nuts. There were also multiple other JAC staffers who witnessed what happened.

According to the Janney staffer who briefed a group of parents about the incident this staffer, having reviewed the video, had no concerns about the safety of Janney students from this employee but it sounds like there are still some questions about whether the staffer could have better handled what sounds like a wild outburst from this child and de-escalated the situation rather than taking a hard line approach.

This was not from the school briefing but apparently there have been a number of incidents with this particular child.

how long does an investigation take?!? Are my kids safe or not at that school??

They need to give us some answers soon.

OMG yes your kids are safe! Are there really Janney parents this insecure? Did you read the previous note - the school has a video of what happened and multiple adult witnesses.

I was at this limited parents only briefing because my child deals with this staffer every single day and we have zero concerns and from corresponding with some other parents in this group after the meeting no one we heard from expressed concerns either. In fact most of the parents at the meeting used the meeting to raise concerns about a completely separate issue.

So it sounds like this situation escalated because the parents of the problematic child sent out emails with their version of events that was not true.

Our experience with AC staff at another upper Northwest elementary is that they acted like their prior job experience was with the DC Department of Corrections!

Do you want to send your kid or have their kid at your house if it turns out they ruined someone’s life over nothing? I don’t. Also, IANAL, but seems legally risky too.

Janney screwed up too. Half baked email that could be “kid kicks adult, adult pushes kid away” or could be “Kid raped in closet”. They needed to make it clearer. They also needed to include information about how they train staff, the processes for validation, background checks, etc. Even *uber* - of all companies - knows to point to these policies when they have something happen.

I’m a happy Janney parent but man, the school handled this with the finesse of a 13 year old dry jumping a tree stump.

This incident screams white male privilege to me.

I agree, the school (particularly JAC) handled it well. I think the recent email from the principal was clear.

I said the school handled it with the finesse of a 13 year old dry humping a tree stump. If that wasn’t clear, I was suggesting they didn’t handle it particularly well.

You're on the wrong thread. This pertains to Janney, not Georgetown Prep.

There once was a parent from Janney
whose hot shoes were very uncanny
At Monday’s Jamboree
Unicorns roamed so free
And some eye candy grabbed his fanny

I don't think is a big tell, is the unfortunate truth. some kids do great in mainstream schools, some kids have profound issues and need support they may not get in mainstream school.
