If she's not attractive then I agree wit OP. If she has good genes then teaching is better because you can raise a family , go back to work , get Summer's off and have a great retirement. |
Similar story here. My best friend's parents both discouraged her from teaching when she was in college. They didn't pressure her, but she listened. She spent the next 20 years as a perpetual student, never really working full time, always looking for something else. She finally became a teacher in her late 40s and she could not be happier. It's was a transformation. Let her be. |
Are we seriously basing career advice for this girl on her level of attractiveness and, implicitly, her supposed value on the marriage market? Disgusting. |
How can the student truly understand the value of the opportunity unless the student works while attending college? |
I know several good friends who became teachers because the path was pretty easy. They all quit after 1-3 years and had to either go back to college for a diff bachelors or got MBAs. They thought it would be an altruistic breezy job, but they were miserable.
We're decades removed from a year of college costing a summer gig's worth of savings. It's $25 large for the cheapest directional U. Damn near $80 large for top privates. Unless you're a trust fund kid, it's not a time to be loafing around in worthless departments. Either work your ass off or drop out and go work in an Amazon factory. |
I find it ironic that people here are asking their kids to work hard and do well in school while at the same time calling teaching a worthless profession.
|
I have a similar story, though I was discouraged from going into teaching by the faculty at my liberal arts college. They informed me that I was too smart for it. So I dithered around in several different professions for about 20 years before finally getting into teaching. |
I'm curious if these are women posting that. Pretty interesting.. |
Personally I would pay and wouldn't want my child to follow my direction entirely. Ultimately I do want my DC to be happy, but if im paying the bill I do expect my child to hear me out and allow me to give them some guidance. |
Op, did your highly intelligent daughter recently get dumped? Lots of silly studies say that silly women purposely dumb down their intelligence or accomplishments in order to attract and retain a mate. Maybe she views teaching or nursing as the epitome of signalling her potential caring, nurturing side. Hope not. |
Ivy merit scholarships do the same thing : 3.5 gpa each yr or it’s pulled. |
NP. Eh it’s unfortunate that this is the way the world works but only fools ignore reality. Attractiveness is a card women can play much more effectively than men. Do you deny that? |
This is true. Think of the SAHMs of rich husbands you know in real life. What do they have in common? Chances are, they are slender and attractive. |
You don’t think 100k or 150k for middle aged adults is a lot do you? You couldn’t buy a nice house in this area on that. |
What ivy gives merit? I thought none of them do. |
