Anything specific? I can't find anything but could be missing it. At that time it was understood there would be a new Shaw MS, at least the way the geographic feeder pathway information reads. |
I don't have time to review the document, but I remember it being said the (endless) meetings. I do, however, think that it was partially a cover story to keep the building out of charter hands / seemed so far down the road no one really seemed focused on it. |

Langley shares a driveway with McKinley tech (HS and MS). The HS students volunteer and help out the ES students.
Placing a high performing high school across from an elementary school is fine. |
Yes. This setup is excellent and we love McKinley Mentors. They also let Langley use their football field sometimes. McKinley Middle's performance has a way to go, but in the 10-year timeframe I have a lot of hope for the school. Being co-located with McKinley Tech in a nicely renovated building is heaven for a middle school. |
| I’m not worried about the high schools location other than it is apparently taking a promised middle school for Shaw with zero communication by the city to those affected. |
Another poster on this thread was appalled at the idea of high schoolers being across the street from a HS. Clearly you have a weak council member, because they have been briefed and, presumably, weighed in. Didn't they share anything via their newsletters / twitter / Facebook? What did your ANC rep say when asked about this? Was there a resolution one way or another? But if you want yet another opportunity, you better call all of the above, plus the chancellor, the DME, the mayor's rep for your ward, and ask for one. |
I've never understood why Seaton, Garrison, and Cleveland parents didn't push harder on the middle school issue. Three schools with active parent groups and a lot going for them, and yet there seems to be little interest in pushing Shaw Middle or improvements at Cardozo Middle. |
| Vaping needs to be fixed soon. Why bother with boundary reviews until behavior is modified? |
| Shaw middle school would be ideal for Basis for a new middle school and high school. Their current building already houses over 600 students in a tiny building. They can clearly fill a new or renovated building. |
Agreed. But to be fair I don’t think parents in general (can’t speak to PTAs) knew they were at such risk of losing something that appeared to have already been decided. The feeder pattern info states there will be a Shaw Middle. |
Basis owns its (inadequate) building. It was just refinanced. They do not want to operate in a leased facility - and DCPS / DC will no longer sell buildings to charters, they will only lease. DCB, Latin and Cap City all had to lease from the city. |
Not a chance the city is going to release that building for a charter. They'd rather have empty school buildings sit than give to a charter. |
And every document re boundaries from DCPS days that feeder patterns are subject to change at any time. |
The utter lack of progress should have been a clue. |

Yes, the proposal did outline a feeder pattern for a theoretical Shaw Middle School. You will note that there is a Columbia Heights MS on the proposed feeder pattern as well, and that is not happening.
Most of the other middle school recommendations as well as ALL of the OOB and at-risk set-aside recommendations have not been implemented. The proposed Shaw Middle School was always a sleight of hand trick to alleviate pressure on DCPS to give the vacant building to a charter. It is criminal that a site so transit accessible and central to the city has been vacant for years. |
