Shaw Middle School -- what's the plan?

Anonymous
There was a public focus on it a few years back when the Wizards wanted to use the whole site to build their new practice facility. The potential reopening of the MS seemed to be a big factor in residents opposing the project, but of course it still sits with no further development.

Forgot about that, nice find! Best line:

"The city is planning to rebuild the school by 2020."

Even at the time that was ridiculously optimistic. Now it looks like a joke.

Why don't you express your outrage to the chancellor?

The ice rink would have been nice, too https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/news/housing-complex/blog/13123687/ice-skating-rink-coming-to-shaw

Can parents of kids enrolled in the feeders speak to where those kids actually end up for middle & high school?

They scatter. Some do go on to Cardozo. Others lottery for a charter or OOB seat elsewhere.

Ross ES students are allowed to go to Cardozo EC (technically all the Shaw feeders' current IB middle school) or Francis-Stevens.

Get real. Shaw middle school would be a big waste like brook land middle. Shiny and new and under enrolled and under performing. NONE of the proposed rigor for brook land came through, no diversity at all. Shaw is even at more of a disadvantage. No strong feeders. DCPS would never put I. Test classes or gifted classes at Shaw middle. Dream on gentrifier parents and hope you get into Latin or basis.

Talk now is of moving Banneker HS to the old Shaw site - either with a full renovation or a new building. Decision expected later this year. With construction starting in 2019. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RtN0_5yBv72W_jss7QdxRazn45A02jHh/view

Banneker could accept more kids in the larger Shaw space. That's good.

That powerpoint makes it look like a new build at Shaw is where they are heading.

Yes, good to hear that there will be a productive use for such a well located site.

I agree, and I think either a new build or renovation at Shaw Middle is a great plan. Although goddamn, if they put a new surface parking lot on Rhode Island Ave on that site (literally, one of the most accessible and densest parts of the city), I am going to scream.

Good to see DCPS is moving forward with a plan for the Shaw site. This is prime real estate and needs to be put to productive use.Expanding the Banneker program makes sense.

Why do we need Shaw middle? Is there any reason to believe it will attract any UMC families? Dc spends a fortune on new buildings and the schools are still underway enrolled and academic failures. See Brookland Middle, Dunbar And soon McFarland middle. DC needs to invest in a true middle school Manet that is test in, academically tracked and race and blind like schools in NY. Of course de Blasio is trying to destroy that as well. Otherwise Shaw middle will just be a waste of money.
