Do you feel that there should be an understanding in writing regarding brining DACA to the floor as McConnell has now promised? He’s made similar promises before and hasn’t kept to his word. Should democrats insist on some written assurance before they agree?

McConnell did. better than a written promise. He went on t.v. and gave everyone a nice sound bite to use against him if he reneges.

However he was very specific in his language. He didn't promise to bring a daca bill that democrats would like to a vote. So that's his promise, and &is warning to democrats: you have until Feb. 8 to make a deal McConnell likes, but if you don't, you'll be getting a vote on legislation you might not like very.much at all.

Hmm, so you're saying McConnell could adequately fulfill his end of the "deal" by bringing absolutely any version of DACA reform he wants to the floor? For example, he could bring a bill that says all DACA children will be immediately rounded up and deported, and that fulfills his promise, in your mind. Is that what you're saying?

If so, then don't you think Democrats are justified in telling him to shove this false deal up his ass?

No, McConnell promised to have a level playing field in terms of marking up and amending the bill. He just made no promise on the ultimate outcome. He made a promise as to process, not as to substance of the bill. However since schumer has already promised trump his wall, a Bi partisan deal is very doable. Schumer is having his ass handed to him today so they will all make the best deal there is to be made. Dems will make the best of it and declare victory but they won't pull any stunts like this again.

Schumer now knows how bad Trump and McConnell are at negotiating. He doesn't have to budge at all now.

Tomorrow, the government is officially shut down. Follow your guidance, which is probably to come in to wrap up or to work if your agency has funding. Then we'll see what happens at noon.

Government employees are expected to work up to 4 hours while in shut-down mode.
We'll get paid for this time off eventually. Thank the taxpayer for some free vacation.

Schumer is such a milquetoast cuck - can we trade him for someone in the Knesset who has some balls?

Moderate posting.

If a deal gets struck based on McConnell's "promise," then it's not Trump that won. It's Dems that (probably foolishly) put down their weapons to allow the government to function. As usual, Dems are more interested in progress than in short-term victory. That's why they constantly get rolled, because they simply aren't as ruthless and willing to burn it all down as Republicans are. I respect them for that country-over-party attitude, but they constantly lose because of it.

Personally, I think that if this McConnell promise deal gets struck, Dems should blanket the country from now until Feb 8 with clips of McConnell's promise, and make absolutely clear that unless he puts a clean DACA bill on the floor before Feb 8, then there's no way they'll allow for a further CR. Make it painfully obvious the whole thing rests on McConnell's honor. Trump will love that because he succeeds in making McConnell look like the asshole, when in reality it's McConnell who's likely sacrificing his honor to help Trump.

My prediction: McConnell will keep his promise and allow a DACA bill to come to the floor. The DACA bill will pass. Trump will then sit on the bill and veto it at the last possible moment, saying it's not good enough. At that point, it will be too late to pass anything else before all the DACA children have lost their protection.

Bonus prediction: If Trump really senses a lot of political pressure, he'll issue some revised Executive Order which suspend deportation of the DACA children. They'll still be 100% vulnerable, but Trump will claim he "saved" them.

My prediction, Ryan won't bring a DACA vote.

We will definitely be here again on Feb 8.

Good guess. There are a dozen different ways Republicans will turn this whole episode into another bait-and-switch, just like they did to get the votes they needed for their tax reform bill. Shameless.

Think this might actually be a Pyrrhic victory for the gop. Americans are generous and empathetic. Think we lose sight of that here in the beltway. Suspect that daca will become a symbol of the tenor that has taken hold and that the vast majority of Americans do not support.
