A meals tax?

Anonymous wrote:Why on earth would anyone vote no to the meals tax? Right now the entire cost of schools rests on the shoulders of homeowners. Those who use the most services - FARM - pay nothing because they don't own homes. But the DO eat out. Yes, probably just fast food, but they should pay their share too. And the tax is barely noticeable to the consumer - most people don't even realize that many of the local cities have a meals tax.

Just stop. Do FARM people live in rental properties? If yes, then property taxes are paid, on their behalf, by the property owner. Are you justifying adding more taxes by saying that people don't notice? Well some people do! It does affect some people, and others are just tired of being forced to pay more & more without seeing much value from paying more! Why are you being so resentful of these "FARM" people? Aren't liberals supposed to be compassionate and have empathy for those who are struggling? Do you think making them pay more taxes will help them?

The majority of my income (literally, over 50%) goes to the state now. It's outta control, and getting worse.

+2. Some forget many of us are on fixed income or have serious medical bills etc. I am generous towards less fortunate, yet do think we're beginning to cross the line with all these taxes.

It really shows the hipocrocy of liberals to push so hard for such a regressive tax.

Seriously. We need to make the FARM people pay for those "free" meals we are giving them because our hearts are so big and we care so much. Someone on here literally said that its time for the "free lunch" crowd to start contributing.......by paying extra taxes on meals eaten outside of school!

If someone is really "poor", they probably should be preparing meals at home rather than eating out at Chipotle or Noodles 'n Company.

Who are you to dictate where and what people eat? Awfully controlling, aren't you?

Less cynically, every other area locally hams am meals tax. What's the rationale for Fairfax not to have one?

Loudoun doesn't. But even if it did, what sort of argument is "Well, every other county has one."? My teen is trying to convince us to buy her an iPhone using that same line of reasoning. Pretty juvenile.

It means it won't harm businesses, who are complaining that it will.

Yes it will.

Signed,
Np and a consumer

No, it won't. You are a minority in this. There may be a lot of people like you who will whine about it but there are very few who will stop eating out over a couple of dollars - particularly when many of the surrounding jurisdictions already have it in place.

It might mean that diners will tip a little less, hurting the working class wait staff.

Taxes don't create wealth, they just shift it from one column to another.

Right, they don't. Would you prefer the real estate column or the meals column?

I'd prefer the county handle its finances better, keep the real estate tax rate where it is and let the increase in house values do its thing.

Don't believe me? Ok. It's not about the "teeny bit" of extra cost. It's about f.u. to the tax & spend democrats. And we don't eat much chicken or potatoes either. We eat mostly vegetarian.
Don't you just love how the democrats leave their jurisdictions with excessively high taxes and go to great places that they proceed to screw up just like the places that they left? Some people will never learn.

And this pp wants republicans/conservatives to leave NOVA:

I don't even understand why conservatives or Republicans live in Fairfax County. You have a whole state who wants you. Leave our blue part alone or just know yes, you will be taxed to fund YOUR child's education and deal with it.
Your part was our part before your left liberal hell holes to come pollute our well.

+1,000. I have lived in FFX County for 35 years and was just going to post a similar comment.

I will be voting no. Points about non-residents pumping in $27 million each year through a meals tax are laughable, as that still means that residents are paying $60+ million per year, given the BOS’ wildly optimistic projected totals collected from this tax. Focus on the costs that residents will bear.

It is pointless to compare Fairfax County as a whole to tourist-serving and urbanized surrounding jurisdictions - Arlington, DC, and Alexandria.

Yes, the sales tax increase is in-place now.

The real estate tax is approved.

This is this next in line.

I'm sure they're plotting for the one after this. I'm guessing something for the metro fiasco, though that is what the sales tax was supposed to be for.

There's never enough of your money to feed the bureaucracy.

Actually no need to guess. Today's Washington Post says the tax after the meal tax is for the metro fiasco. Gotta have a dedicated stream of money (in addition to all the other money). Even though the raise in the sales tax was supposed to specifically earmarked for transportation.

A new tax a year....with a pipeline of more. Sigh.....

Time to just say stop.

That's how it was in Maryland under o'malley. I couldn't believe that after I left Maryland they finally got a republican governor. After years of feeling like my vote was thrown away.

Don't live in Maryland, but it was interesting that the new Republican governor lowered many fees and tolls, and the Democrats were upset about that.

I guess Democrats are that addicted to spending other peoples money.
