Start with the ones denying it has anything to do with slavery. The fact that it is intractably entangled with slavery, just as the Nazi swastika is intractably entangled with the murder of millions of Jews, is not "my" truth, it's THE truth. Start with the fact that it STILL is intractably entangled with white supremacists and hate groups. The photos that were posted all came from within the last 2 years, they are a depiction of what is still CURRENTLY going on, not of what once was. That's not "my" truth, it's THE truth. If this does not comport with what you believe to be the truth then you are deceiving yourself. |
Do as I say, don't do as I do? ![]() A jewish acquaintance once told me that the most anti-semitic thing to say is 'I have a jewish friend". I think it applies to other races and ethnisities too. Those who babble about having black friends are usually quite segregated. Like chose to live in a state with 12.5% black population. BTW, my county is like 80% black (I'm white). So do everybody a favor, STFU about racism. You got no clue. |
The south land has a unique culture, dialect and four hundred year history. |
American patriots proud of the south:

The only photo with a black guy is the one in front of the flag of Mississippi, not the Confederate flag. |
What county around here is 80% black?? Sorry but I am not going to relocate in order to prove a point. I live in a community that you would say is chock full of "illegals", so by your logic I must already be doing my penance or something. It never ceases to amaze me how racists think about race. |
There are plenty of blacks who fly the colors; and the fellow in the picture does look mighty fine and proud in front of the Mississippi flag doesn't he? Drop your prejudice and scare mongering. |

how is the confederate flag a sad part of history, when the annihilation of the native Americans is never mentioned. Or did the northern state inhabitants kill them too, or did they die from disease because every woman descided to show their baby to a white man who caughed on the child. Somehow the slaves never died like that. Perhaps we forget that the Union represented white men. Blacks, women and natives did not have a vote. So it was not a republic for the people or by the people |
Are you saying that these positions are mutually exclusive? I don't wave an Indian Genocide flag over my house. I don't shoot off fireworks on "Trail of Tears Day". |
Slavery was a terrible chapter in both American and world history, one whose effects are still felt today. The annihilation of native Americans was also a terrible part of our history. Disenfranchisement of and discrimination against women and non-whites were both wrong, as well, and some aspects of the discrimination continue today. Those who currently most commonly carry and display the Confederate Flag embody the worst of those histories. Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. |
You showing your flag is about slavery. Marriage is between two persons. You criticize Obama because you are rascist. I make the rules!!! |
NP. Just asked my African-born, Maryland-raised DH what he thinks about the confederate flag.
"What about it?" he said. "Like, what do you think about it? Do you think it's a symbol of racism?" Shrugs. "I don't really give a shit." To me, it's always been symbolic of rednecks and yes racism. I'm a Jew who was not born in, but grew up in, Appalachia. My perception of the confederate flag is a direct reflection of that upbringing. |
The display of a Confederate flag for other than bona fide historical purposes constitutes a personal act of armed revolution against the United States, was treated as such for a number of years, and merits the most severe penalties.

does not sound like you want to live in a place that has freedom of speach. |
