It is, but it's one of those that should be bumped up periodically

Agreed! My kids are in DCPS and neither of them ever had lice before this school year. This year they both had it at different times. We were totally wigged out by it. Now anytime ANYONE scratches their head, we're like a pack (tribe? troop?) of monkeys checking each other for creepy crawlies.

Now I'm itchy.

Just keep lice combing YOUR kid preemptively one a week and you won't have a problem.

You don’t need to use a product that would cause an allergic reaction. That kid’s parents could comb too.

+1

Lazy parents keep getting lice in their house, from experience.

My daughter had lice last week, and we were treated by a lice lady. We’ve been combing daily since then using the lice lady’s foam. With 6 days of combing we’re still finding nits each time (and now some of them are small nymphs). How long should we expect to continue finding them? Is this normal to keep finding them daily? Her infestation seemed to be relatively small. The lice lady found four adult bugs and nothing else (no nits), so it seemed she had only recently caught it from someone with a bad infestation (that was the lice lady’s guess). Help!

Sounds like you are not combing long enough each time. The blog I followed (the nice life lady) recommended counting strokes to 100 and starting over at zero every time you find something. Do this every 2-3 days. I didn’t stop until I’d had 3 combings in a row (9 days) of finding literally nothing.

And I don’t know what foam you are referring to. We just washed hair, then left the conditioner in for the combing.

Where do you find a live lady? Do you take your kid to pediatrician if you suspect something?

With my kids, it started in about 2nd grade. It has continued now through the fifth grade.

In the last week, however, I have seen three girls in about the 8th grade.

Do you often see clusters of kids from the same school/neighborhood? Do you encourage families to give their friends a heads up? My kids got it from sharing helmets at Calleva a few years ago. Just tell people so everyone can check and comb out!

A lice lady like Lice Happens will charge you to come to your house, so sure, take them to a Dr. if you don't feel confident in diagnosing. But if you follow my advice and 1) already have (several) licemeister combs around and 2) preventively comb out your child's hair, you are going to be able to diagnose lice yourself. Just keep combing in the bath each night until you don't find anymore lice/eggs and then you can go to doing it one a week.

I wouldn't say I see clusters. I get calls all over the NOVA area. I have been in some very fancy, nice houses and some regular homes (like my own). Rich, poor, nice school districts, no one is immune. Just like everyone can catch a cold or the flu, anyone can catch lice.

I swear I got lice one time from one brief, momentary hug of another mom friend. The louse took the opportunity to climb from her to my head. It just takes an instant of casual contact. Lice are very, very good at what they do.

Happy to have found this thread after live epidemic at DD’s school. It’s a private and could afford a life clinic or some parent education but they do nothing
