College Decisions 2014

You are like most parents in other areas. Travel in just about any direction from the DC region and you'll see the profusion of HS/college stickers start to decline radically. Not as many helicopter parents, and not as many people who view both themselves and other members of their family as walking resumes.

I have lived in Chicago, Portland, OR, the bay area, DC, and Austin. There are plenty of stickers in all of these places. Where you don't see a lot of stickers is working class neighborhoods in any area of the country. Go to any upper middle class neighborhood in any reasonably large city and it's college stickers galore.

Agree, and I'm from California. You see them everywhere. And, for the record, I have a college sticker and a high school sticker on my car because I'm proud FOR my kids, not of them. It's a moment of triumph for the kid when the sticker goes on. It's for them, not for me.

DD is going to a school that is such a total R E A C H that I'm actually a little concerned. But she'll never hear it from me.

NYU is notoriously stingy with financial aid, so I'm never surprised when someone opts not to go there.

They're trying to change that and have a big fundraising effort going on.

Ever realize that you could drive all over the UK and never see an Oxford or Cambridge sticker? Or throughout Paris never see a Sorbonne sticker? Americans are so class insecure!

Thank you!

Some people should just stop instead of showing off their ignorance. The "It's only a DMV" thing didn't work, so now it has to be an American thing.

And is someone really trying to make the point that Americans are more class conscious than Europeans? Why with their royal families and all? Obviously all PP has done IS drive around those countries instead of living there for any period of time.

The only ones insecure are those bothered by college stickers. I couldn't care less what anybody puts on their cars.

Yeah, just like tea time, palaces and royal families are European things.

Some people lack culture and intelligence so badly it's not even funny.

maybe different cultures define 'cultured' differently? I don't think any person or group has a monopoly on 'culture', just different versions

You prove the point that it's only the elite schools that bother you. There are hundreds of other schools in England and France but you named the ones that would pose a problem to you.

Jealous much?

DD rejected by Princeton, accepted at Duke, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Virginia.

Virginia state tuition would be fully covered by prepaid plan, but she chose Duke.

I understand fraternity/sorority life is a big factor on Duke campus. Do you know of university or SLAC where Greek life is not very important? DS in 10th grade and an excellent student. He is interested in Duke, but has no interest in joining a fraternity. He wants a campus that is diverse and open-minded. Not sure that is my impression of Duke. We will visit, but interested i
n others experiences.
