HARDY MIDDLE SCHOOL: Record numbers from feeder schools for 2014-2015

Anonymous
I wanted to revive this thread to find out if IB enrollment truly did rise as anticipated for this school year. Did it? How's Hardy IB participation looking lately?

Thanks!

For 2014-15 the IB percentage was 15%.

I've yet to see anything officially released by DCPS for 15-16.

It is tough to say. The most current DCPS Hardy profile shows 15% for 2014 - 15. Not only is it old data, but it is aggregated for the entire school. Anecdotally, we are hearing that there are big differences between the grades in terms of %IB. It would be good if DCPS would release more current info and even more informative if grade-level data became available.

A rising tide lifts all ships, etc. So much of the snarkiness found in DCUM forums is related to a fear that "if you get more, I get less" (as well as the fact that anonymous posts allows the bitch to come out). A post that celebrates more people moving into DCPS should not draw the ire of those who are in - either IB or OOB, you can (and should) have better options. It only takes a few motivated families in any area to start the process of strong local involvement in schools (Deal 1st, then Hardy, and the rest, I hope).

I am from the Midwest, where everyone just went to their own local public school (or Catholic school); it meant that there was "skin in the game" for schools to serve their clients. When well-intentioned, motivated parents from other wards send their kids to an OOB school, it weakens their community school. I am not blaming those parents; everyone must do what they think is best for their child. It's just an unfortunate unintended consequence.

I think the snarkiness is simply due to the fact that anybody can post anonymously and some people do not have anything better to do than post snarky posts here, not to "if you get more I get less". my kids are in elementary, but will go to Deal. I have been following recently Hardy and I am only excited to see the school become more and more appealing to kids zoned for Hardy. frankly, I can't wait to see many more strong DCPS schools at all levels and in all areas of town. Deal is overcrowded and simply cannot be "the option" for public middle school. I am fairly sure a lot of parents zoned for Deal feel happy to see other schools emerge as strong middle schools.

+1

+1000 exactly. Better for everyone to have more than one strong DCPS Middle School.

Would the Hardy folks tell me if I asked in person during a tour or open house? For that matter - do they offer info session meet-ups/tours on demand?

If you could get a current school directory from a parent, you could just check the addresses.

You should call the school. I know they do offer info sessions/ open houses in the fall, so it would most likely have to be by appointment if you want a tour now. I heard that Principal Pride is quite accessible.

You can definitely call & request a tour. They do a lot of sessions in the fall but also are doing some meeting and tours this spring as families are making their final decisions about this fall's enrollment.

All of the DCUM speculation around Hardy makes it sound inaccessible, but it's really a pretty small school and the principal is very easy to reach if you wanted to and try.

Principal Pride routinely goes to the PTA meetings of the Hardy feeder schools -- and they did an 'intent' survey for this year's 5th graders (and they do 'shadow' visit days for the students to go see the school too. You can actually even go trick or treat there one day the week before Halloween too). The actual enrollment numbers won't be in for any school until fall/later this year. (Many of the elementaries start positing their class lists soon, and will give a sense of how many returning 5th graders for each of the feeders (as a predictor of the 17-18 potential uptick) but of course some are on waiting lists for other places and won't be final numbers. Middle schools don't have the same class assignment dynamics, so they aren't posted early like that (not at Deal either).

There were some early indications that this year's incoming 6th could be as high as 20-30% IB and 50-60 feeder... but too soon to know. Principal Pride does actually report the numbers when she visits schools or does open houses.

This is true for all schools! They haven't put them out yet, even for Deal.

+1 Took Tour, and had a great time! Principal mentioned IB/Feeder was at 21% when I was there this year.

Can you request a tour even if your child is not ready yet for Hardy. I have a rising 5th grader and we are IB for Hardy.

Yes but please wait for the autumn public tour season. The school administration is busy with managing the school year, which is not over yet.
Thanks.
