Did anyone else's spouse kill it at Biglaw last month?

If you have to ask you clearly do not know the market.

Guilty as charged! If I did, I wouldn't be asking. So what's the answer omniscient one?

just calc the billable hours, if/how his rate changed over the year and if he's a litigator what case(s) was won or if he's transactional law what deals closed.
then ask yourself if those clients, deals, cases are replicable next year or are a 1 in 10 yr occurrence.

really, start by asking him, you should have years ago. he should know his standing in the firm and in the market. or if it was carry-driven comp, not billable projects.

I don't plan to ask. He does not like to talk about it. He's just a partner at a firm whose distribution fluctuates across a large range and in February it was crazy high. I don't know the reason- I haven't heard and big ccase was one, although there are many at any given time. Time will tell if this is replicable- I haven't seen any eplies that this is across the board.

I am so glad I got off the hamster wheel. We feel rich for the first time ever . . . and I have a fascinating legal job (judge) AND I get to tuck my kids in at night. Priceless.

What a weird marriage. No one knows but him, OP. perhaps he doesn't want to all to you bc you're insufferable, as many on this thread have pointed out.

Good for you! There aren't too many lifetime appointment opportunities.

OP here, it is definitely a marriage with subpar communication across many levels. But I don't think he has any idea why it was so big (other than lots of clients paid the bills) and so he would get annoyed that I both pointed it out and asked what to him is an unknowable or unanswerable question.

My DH, a partner in BL, just read this thread with me, inlcuding OP's latest. His quip?

"Their marriage is doomed."

If you were not such an insufferable twit, OP, I'd wish you well in the divorce proceedings.

I especially love, I think very most of all, how he doesn't want to talk about it and you are spilling it all over DCUM. You do realize some of the gossipy legal blogs would figure out what firm pays distributions at that time and who your DH is in about 15 minutes, don't you?

Answer: 100% ANAMOLY

Sorry OP, don't underwrite your 2013 spa visits, new wardrobe, or any asset purchases to last month's "big draw".

Furthermore, I second the PP.

Yeah, those yearend bonuses that hit the bank account in Feb or March are just sooooo strange.
Do you think he'll get an April bonus too??

This is one of the funniest (in the weird sense) I've read on Dcum.

Oh, and at DH's firm, they don't "kill" anything. It is a firm made up entirely of vegetarians.

OP, please get some marriage counseling. The two of you seem to be sorely lacking in communication skills.

We are so so lacking in communication skills and in counseling. But the least of my concerns is engaging in a conversation with him about something he can't answer. He doesn't know what happened at other big law firms recently...hence the original question! Very few people it seems can or will speak to the issue at hand.

You really think your husband, an EQUITY PARTNER AT A FIRM, doesnt know how the firm is doing and why? I really hope you are hot as hell, cause you don't seem to bring much in terms of intellectual horsepower.

LOL @ you still trying to insult the other posters. You and your "marriage" need major help.
Anonymous
Huh? When has OP ever insulted the PPs? Why is the marriage in quotes? That makes no sense.

Make this post go away, please. I always check "recent posts," and this (BORING YAWN HO HUM) thread keeps clogging my screen.

Yes, that makes perfect sense, BUT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY DON'T GET YEAR END BONUSES.
