None! Just because that wasn't the purpose for the Back to School Night Potluck. The purpose was for our children to socialize and for us parent to get know what goes on in our children's classrooms on a daily basis, and as a plus to get to know the kids teachers.

I don't understand why folks are so afraid to discuss concerns with the office. Perhaps I've been lucky but all my interactions with everyone there have been super positive.

You're lucky. I know a handful of parents, including myself, who were almost kicked out of the school for expressing valid concerns.

Can you share what those concerns are? We are very new to the school and all this tension concerns me.

All this talk about being invited to participate in the board or getting asked to be a member is insane. Wasn't it mentioned in the newsletter (some time ago) that people interested in becoming a board member should reach out to the office?

From the December 2010 newsletter:

If anyone is interested in serving on the Board, please talk about it with one of the Directors and they can submit your name to be interviewed for upcoming vacancies.

Our family had a great time at the potluck. We were very happy to spend time with other families, and especially our son's teachers. We have been part of this great school for over 2 years. We miss Betsy and have been in touch with her. I was upset at first, but am moving forward from this. Hope others can do the same.

This was listed in the AUGUST 2011 NEWSLETTER:

If you ever have any input on any issues that are handled by the Board, in addition to the Directors, you can also feel free to talk to any of the Board members, the Board President or any of the Committee Chairs.

I wish that I could move on but I’m too heartsick over this treatment of a longstanding, loyal director of the center. There’s a problem that needs fixing at Rock Spring Children’s Center. The president of the board of directors, a position that for 22 years was unpaid and volunteer, is also being paid to fill the role of CEO. So the person running the board is overseeing himself, for salary, raises, performance, what have you. Now he’s apparently fired an employee without so much as a warning or chance to remedy any problems. I would think at the least Betsy should have been given a performance plan before being terminated.

For any teachers reading this, please know that we parents appreciate everything you do for our children. When even the director can be fired with no notice, think about how vulnerable the teachers we love are. We’d be just as upset if this happened to you.

I hope the board of directors realizes what a conflict of interest this situation presents and how dangerous and undermining it is for the stability of the center that we all love.

EXACTLY. So what are our options as parents? Demand a meeting with the Board? Start a petition for him to resign one of the positions? Show them this string of messages? Get alumni involved?

This post hits the nail right in the head concerning the problem at hand. We can't just move on given that one individual is calling all the shots with no system of checks and balances. Something needs to be done, but what? My child adores the school and teachers, so I would really prefer not to change schools. But they're a douchebag running the school.

Your child is clearly a better judge of character than you are.

How about you let your kid stay at the school and you and the other handful of people (if it really is that many) who don't want to listen to anything but the sound of your own bitching and complaining find another school to torment. The rest of us are tired of you getting on here and bashing good people and bringing negativity to our school.

Why is it bitching and complaining to point out that one person is in charge of the whole school and does not have to be accountable to anyone. Meanwhile, this person can bully the staff and parents, and if anyone dares to complain, they're threatened with having their child expelled from the school. BTW, pres/CEO didn't look like he was very popular on back to school night. Mostly he was just standing around by himself. I wonder why he opted not to make a speech as he typically does at school events.

It is possible to be very happy with the teachers, but very troubled by the leadership and administration. No one who takes offense to these "negative" comments needs to be on this board. Read: Shaun get off of dcum and get back to your own self-serving pursuits and cronies on the almighty Board.

As a caveat I have posted only once, but the President brought this upon himself. No one else. DCUM is a forum to share issues and concerns and parents seem unable to go directly to the CEO himself (understandable). Given that a number of PPs have been threatened with expulsion by raising concerns, I think we have a serious leadership credibility issue. This is not about Betsy, this is not about the wonderful school and class act teachers, this is about the paid man in charge who calls all the shots and personally selects or removes board members as he sees fit. And board meetings are closed. So not sure how to encourage change otherwise.
