Skyview is Open for Opt-In from Any Rising 9th and 10th grader in Fairfax County

It is done but feel free to go into every thread and complain. That will change everything. The school is needed, I am sorry that you don’t see that and seem to think that the best plan is to whine for as long as possible.

I am excited for the kids who will be attending. My kid is not going to be there but I think it is going to be an amazing opportunity. Chantilly and Centreville will not be crowded. The other schools in the area will have space for the families likely to move into the new construction. There is a soution for filling Herndon but I suspect that you don’t want to hear about that.

+1

20 minute drive by car from Skyview to Herndon at best. School bus? Probably an hour or so if you are on the first stop at that time of day. Everyone headed to the DTR. And afterschool activities? Forget it. Traffic is awful.

Are you that upset that Skyview is opening? Is it jealousy? Anger because your school isn't getting something that you want? Worried about kids being moved to a school you don't want to? What is it that is bothering you?

The kids and admin and staff at Skyview have nothing to do with the giant mess that the County made of this process. Despite that mess, 800 kids opted into the school. I think that is a positive sign and I am hoping that they have an amazing year next year.

DP without a dog in this fight. You guys sound like little petulant children the way you demand fealty to the idea that you were owed this school.

Gee. Not the pp to whom you are responding. Why can't you be happy for these neighborhoods? This school is going to solve a problem that has existed for years for Chantilly. Westfield, too, is too crowded and the neighborhoods from the Skyview area have a long, traffic filled slog to Westfield. If you don't drive on 28 from Dulles to Willard, you have no idea.

Yes, there are going to be some growing pains. But without this school, Westfield would soon be overflowing like Chantilly.

DP. I would be happier for the neighborhoods getting Skyview if FCPS had a clearer vision for all the schools in the area. It doesn’t appear they paid any attention in advance to what opening Skyview might mean for other schools like Westfield and Centreville. Will those schools lose teachers and electives? And why do their capital plans still call for expanding Centreville to 3000 seats? It seems this would no longer be necessary, but they reiterated their plan to build CVHS out to 3000 in the most recent CIP.

It’s easy to assert that other western schools besides Chantilly would be overcrowded in the future but for Skyview, but that’s not clear with the declining student enrollment trends.

When MCPS opens new schools it engages in far more detailed analysis and is much more transparent with the public. FCPS just seems to wing it, and the dysfunction is getting more obvious every week.

Westfield will have plenty of electives and teachers. Will they lose some? Possibly. Will Chantilly lose some? Possibly. Teachers? They will be as fully staffed. Why would you think they would not be? It will still have more kids than many FCPS high schools.

Right now, there is currently new construction in Oakton. It will soon be overcrowded. If they don't move some out, it is likely to be overcrowded by the end of next year. Lots of new construction CLOSE to Oakton.

I don't think schools in Western Fairfax are going to be losing as many kids as some think. Compared to some of the other areas, they have lost few since last September. Chantilly is at same as September. Westfield is down 2 since September. Several FCPS schools are down more than 40. Likely due to dropouts or immigration issues.

Time will tell.

Schools lose teachers and electives when they lose kids. Herndon and Centreville have both lost hundreds of kids in recent years. Now Westfield and Chantilly will lose lots of kids, too. There’s no commitment from FCPS to preserve staffing levels or electives at other schools affected by Skyview. All we really know is that Reid is far more invested in Skyview than any other high school in the county, even if it only has 800 kids this fall.

I don't think you understand how staffing levels work. And, if Reid is more interested in Skyview than any other school, she sure has a funny way of showing it.

Electives vary according to interest, as well.

Centreville has lost "hundreds of kids?" How is that right-?-it is not physically that large and is over capacity right now.

Chantilly has almost 3000 kids. That is too many and space is a serious issue.

It’s easy to confirm that Centreville has lost over 400 kids since 2022-23. You’d have to be on a whole other level of clueless not to know that and still think you have anything meaningful to contribute here.

And no one is saying Chantilly is not overcrowded. FCPS neither builds nor buys a new school every time a school is overcrowded. Pretending otherwise makes you look even more clueless.

How many years has Chantilly been overcrowded? Why do you think they built Westfield? To relieve Centreville and Chantilly.

So, don't expand Centreville. Keep those kids next door going to Fairfax.

It’s hard to be happy for little whiny babies who think they are owed the school because a long term possible school once upon a time appeared on the CIP.

And I wouldn’t really care, except that you two or three pretend like you have the obvious morally superior position, when it’s obvious that demand is lackluster at best and we just have the two or three biggest homers here talking up this forum.

I guess what I’m saying is that your hubris is off putting. And it seems likely that with your neighborhood school, the school board is going to move other families against their will. Again, not my family, but I just think your zealous advocacy is super tone deaf.

+1000.

And the sad thing is it’s virtually guaranteed that most School Board members hadn’t given a passing thought about the domino effects when they decided to buy KAA. All they saw was an opportunity to play hero ball.

It’s no surprise it’s catching up to them now, whether it’s opening up Skyview for enrollment to far more schools than originally planned or catching flak from other families who now stand to be moved against their will, including to schools other than Skyview.

REMINDER: when KAA was purchased, we were in the middle of a county wide Boundary study with who knows what moves would have been made in this area with no viable options.

You anti-Skyview people think it's fine that other people's kids go to school in trailers as long as you get to keep the status quo. You don't care at all that they hauled in 23 trailers and modulars at Chantilly, 13 at Westfield, 22 at Centreville, 16 at Mclean or 29 at Robinson.

Now that the school is bought and paid for, we'll see how many change their tunes about the empty, unused seats at Herndon needing to be filled when the next review comes around. Hippocrites, all of you.

Math is hard, especially for FCPS and the contractor. Here is the plan and why the delay.

Needed to bring an end to the opt-in process as those kids will be grandfathered in for four years. Next build boundary to bring Skyview to capacity for next year. Then tweak around the edges to manage the secondary fallout caused by the Skyview boundary build. Gatehouse and contractors have read the various DCUM posts to see where resistance will be strongest. Job done.

So you want to have large amounts of excess capacity at Herndon, and then create large amounts of excess capacity at Westfield and Fairfax as well?

Utterly ridiculous.

S9, you are in favor of very long bus rides?

You should answer the question before you ask one.

The answer is to move the kids who are closer to Herndon but not at Herndon to Herndon, that would be Great Falls. And those parents through a hissy fit every time it is mentioned. But, they are far closer to Herndon and could fill those spaces. I understand why they don’t want to move from Langley, I would not want to make that swap either. But that is your answer for filling Herndon.

McNair and Coates will not be moved to Herndon because that would increase the FARMs rate too much and Herndon is then in the position Lewis is in.

The other answer could be remove IB from SLHS and now the kids transfering from Herndon to SLHS have to stay at Herndon, which would return 200 kids to Herndon. It would also stop the 150 or so kids who pupil place out of SLHS.

FCPS could have placed the aviation pathway at Herndon, which might of generated interest in kids attending Herndon as part of a STEM based Academy. I proposed that when all of this started. Schools like Herndon and Lewis and Mt. Vernon are places where the county should be investing in placing real programs that people are interested in that will cause people to want to move. Maybe a selective arts program at two and a STEM program at the other. Herndon gets TJ2, so that the bus ride for a more STEM focused school is less. A Votch school at lewis and and Arts program at Mt. Vernon.

There are new houses and townhomes going up in Western Fairfax. The schools out this way are not seeing these huge drops in numbers. SLHS is close to capacity and there is more construction in the area. Westfield has new housing projects. Skyview decreases the pressure on schools that are close to capacity and brings overcrowded schools to being at capacity. Westfield is going to be backfilled by kids from Centreville. Centreville shouldn’t be expanded. The area balances out. Herndon is solved by moving the kids who are closer to Herndon than their other HS to Herndon. Don’t put that on the kids who are farther away and can move 3-4 HS closer to them then Herndon.
