Skyview is Open for Opt-In from Any Rising 9th and 10th grader in Fairfax County

Anonymous
In other thread it seemed unclear....Skyview is now accepting anyone who wants to opt in. All you have to do is complete the IT-110 form and give it to your school and you will be transferred. There is space - all are welcome to opt in throughout Fairfax county.

Also, they've just announced a formal partnership with TJ and an info session on Saturday, May 2 at noon. Below are the details.

Skyview students will have the unique opportunity to engage in shared Aerospace Science programming, science fairs, and peer mentoring with Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). This alliance ensures students have unparalleled access to specialized academic experiences and resources.

If your family is interested in being part of the inaugural Skyview community, we invite you to learn more by attending an open house on Saturday, May 2, at noon. TJHSST Principal Mike Mukai will join me in sharing information about our collaboration and answering your questions. Please register to attend.

In the interim, I encourage you to visit the Skyview High School website. If you would like to learn about Skyview’s enrollment process, please view our Student Registration page or contact us at 571-720-0691.

Sincerely,

Dave Jagels

So it's now a magnet after all?

So the School Board gave Reid a specific instruction to open Skyview as a neighborhood high school and, in response, Reid is doing everything she can to make the creation of Skyview boundaries as contentious and controversial as possible, while now also trying to market Skyview as “TJ Lite” because not enough kids opted in for 2026-27 from the five pyramids specifically identified?

What a debacle. I didn’t think Reid could outdo the mess she made of the county-wide boundary study, but here we are. At this rate, they’ll be paying signing bonuses in June if people can find kids willing to enroll in Skyview in August.

I think it is more that Reid is desperate to enroll 1,000 students for this coming school year. She should've just announced the Skyview boundaries at the same time as the other boundaries were announced earlier this year.

They could have announced the boundaries but they also should have deferred opening the school until it had the facilities for sports.

She didn’t want to do that because opening it now under an opt-in model plays to those who wanted a magnet or quasi-magnet.

Too bad not enough kids have been buying what she’s selling. Another failure in a series of failures by Reid.

How many students do they have?

Sorry Reid, no one wants to attend Skyview. Leave our boundaries alone too. FCPS should never have purchased it.

Why didn't they just wait until it was ready and open it as a real school with boundaries and sports, and none of this nonsense.

They won’t tell you. They want impressionable students (now also in pyramids nowhere near Skyview) to think they are snagging one of those few remaining, coveted seats at Skyview when it’s actually FCPS that’s desperate to hit their number.

If they don't have enough students, they are going to have to significantly cut back their course offerings for next year. They can't run classes with 15 students. FCPS budget is 30+ kids per HS class.

Agree. Even if FCPS cuts them a little slack for the first year with the staffind formulas (like they could have only 25 kids in a class), it won't be enough to save most of the courses. They won't be able to offer much.

I wouldn’t under-estimate the willingness of Reid and her minions to depart from the norms to try and keep Skyview afloat. It’s the only school she cares about.

No. If she cared about it she would have set traditional boundaries long ago.

I don't have any idea what her goal is, but I think she thinks she needs some kind of great innovative achievement as a feather in her cap.

Wasn’t the number at 900 recently? How many do you think they need for an ideal opening? 1500?

What’s your source? They want 1000. The county wouldn’t give them permission to open with 1500 now.
