When do you leave the sinking ship

Meanwhile, speak with the many immigrants already here about how eager they are to trade life in the U.S. for life anywhere else. Not just low-skilled immigrants from the 3rd World, but also the highly skilled and educated immigrants in executive roles, many of whom have lived in various global locations as part of their career progressions. I suspect you'll find, as I have, that they laugh at the notion that live elsewhere is better by any rational metrics.

You have some data or information to back this up? It sounds like some kind of maga fantasy.

Just talk to any immigrant, legal or otherwise, about how eager they are to return to their home country, or to leave the U.S. for a 3rd country. I have, and have yet to encounter anyone who believes the grass is greener elsewhere. They know; U.S. libs fantasize without personal experience.

That's not data. That's "trust me bro!"

I personally know 2 immigrant families who have recently returned to their home country. One is a day couple where one person in the couple has Canadian citizenship. The other couple is Jamaican. They were poor and broke when they came here, got an education, made some money, and went back home to live on a beach and not deal with this crap.

Is home perfect for either couple? No. But they had an out and took it because this country very clearly doesn't want them here.

If you have a problem with people considering leaving, and you think the US is so much better than everywhere else in the world, why vote for someone whose whole thing is making America great again, as though it isn't currently? And why support a regime making the country feel hostile to anyone who isn't a wealthy straight white man?

I find it so strange how MAGA simultaneously thinks America is perfect but needs to be made great again, and that no one should ever consider leaving despite our crap healthcare system, crap education system, crap labor rights, crap electoral system, crap social safety net, crap policing and justice system, regular mass shootings, crumbling infrastructure, nonexistent modern public transportation, receding rights to privacy and bodily autonomy, and on and on.

Please tell me how exactly this place is supposed to be the ideal no one else can compete with? Because as far as I can see, most developed countries are kicking our asses.

There are plenty of immigrants who'd love to take your place, and given that you want to let them all in, maybe clear some space and make room for them.

This is what I don’t get from MAGA. When you guys criticized Biden or Obama, I figured you did not like the administrations, not that you hated America. So why is it when non-Trump supporters (who are NOT all leftists) are vocal about being unhappy, you equate that with hating the US? If anything, the people protesting and being vocal probably love their country and believe they are fighting for a better future. And people are talking about leaving because they are scared. You can both love your country and disagree with its policies. It’s not that hard to comprehend.

US is such a dump S hole.

No healthcare
Garbage infrastructure and public transportation
No childcare
Expensive housing
Expensive college
Expensive insurance
Huge population in jail
Tons of shootings, including at schools

Now the US is gonna blow trillions of more dollars on multiple wars while millions are now struggling to find jobs. The gestapo is now stopping citizens in the streets and asking for their papers, and violently assaulting citizens with zero consequences.

It is hilarious how Americans think they live in a good country. The US is a certified dump. A corrupt morass beyond salvation. A country filled with millions of the most dimwitted morons on the planet. The US is like Russia now. A complete dump, but only relevant because they can bully people with nukes. Such a dystopian Christian fascist hellhole nightmare. It is shocking how such stupid people think they are living well and think their country is great.

I want to leave, but where to go and be able to purchase property, get healthcare?
I guess I could buy insurance while I go through long citizenship process…?

+1. This exact same thread gets repeated every few weeks or so.

Funny all the MAGA cried the whole four years he was president. How much they hated America....same for them I suppose.

if you purchase property in France you get residency and then path to citizenship, same with Greece.
dont you have grandparents who came from somewhere??? I am of south asian heritage and I find it crazy that the wealthy physicians etc we know aren't pulling up stakes- I mean most I know are fixing up their ancestral lands and looking to "retire" or divide their time but I guess the US passport is still highly convenient and there are security issues for many- especially low caste or minorities in many places. if you have one of those options- go back to your families home country, they have changed a lot and a significant amount of western trained professionals could really change a lot of places for the better and you wouldn't always be fighting racism which is frankly exhausting! I really dont understand why there is so much hate for the US and why we had to have these wildly swinging presidencies- this country was just fine and working much better than most until 2016.

wanted to add and still is for the most part- just stop reading teh news so much and vote- the only protest that amounts to anything is in the voting booth.

Well said. MAGAs won't read it...but well said.

Nice, why yes I do. Grandfather born there

Huh -- so if my kids' great-great-grandparents were from Canada, my kids could get citizenship? God knows how I'd prove that.

The voting booth is not a protest. It's harm reduction at best. The master will never hand you the tools to dismantle his house.

Vote, absolutely. But there's more to resistance than that. Taking our democracy, constitution, and freedoms for granted is what got us here.

My brother is obtaining/buying a Golden Visa for Portugal, which would open up the entire EU. Portugal has tightened up a bit (long residency requirement now) due to demand, but it's still an excellent choice. Peaceful, stable country that turned no one over to the Nazis when people fled there during WWII.

Latin America is tempting: closer, warm, inexpensive but developed. Costa Rica, Uruguay, and of course Mexico. So many digital nomads in Mexico City now that the anti-American sentiment is high, but there will be anti-Americanism everywhere, thanks to Trump and history.
There are many options, but the bureaucracy is daunting and it takes time. So it pays to start thinking and preparing for the worst, but hoping we can save our democracy.

Even immigrants - my old nanny - are considering returning home to Central America. It used to be the American Dream now it's the American Nightmare!!

I'm first generation and a US citizen and educated here entirely. I'm fluent in my native country and considering leaving US to go back.

Both my HS/MS aged kids want to study abroad.

The US is done. I know some think it's no prob here, some want to stay and protest for a return to glory, but some and a growing number like me believe the best days are over. Broken and outdated and corrupt things catch up - if nobody willing or able to fix and change - it gets worse and goes downhill.
