Correct. Notre Dame, like Lehman Brothers, thought that they were too big to fail. Well ND had a bailout option--to play a solid BYU team for a significant payout. Would garner lots of attention as many want to scout ND players & many love ND football (including me). However, ND AD had a realistic fear that a demoralized ND football team might get their butts whipped by an angry BYU team. When the going gets tough, the Irish cry & run. |
| Notre Dame has a $20 billion endowment for an undergrad enrollment of less than 8,000 kids. Do some quick math a $4 million payout in less than 1 day interest return on their portfolio. ND and Duke are 2 of the wealthiest schools in the country $4 million from CFP is not even couch coins. |

ND made $20m they did not have to share with a conference off of last year's run to the championship game. The Pop Tart money is nothing to them.
And I don't think BYU had anything to do with their decision. I'd encourage BYU to do them same since they also got royally screwed by the fact that some rules don't seem to apply to Bama but do to them. Burn it down. Top 12 ranked teams at the end of the season. Ranking determined by computer. |
| Who remotely cares about BYU. |
A more mature response would have been to wait a day or two for emotions to settle before casting emotional, reactive votes in line with the childish response from the ND AD that brings shame to the ND football program and to the university. As an independent, Notre Dame football should be relegated to playing only other independents. Review ND's football teams schedule this year. Joining either the SEC or the Big Ten Conference would destroy Notre Dame football as ND football could not withstand the weekly punishment of an SEC or Big Ten schedule. |
| ND fan here and I’m certainly happy about their decision not to play the stupid Pop Tart Bowl. It would mean nothing. Besides out guys headed to the NFL and for next year, risking an injury for a nothing game would make no sense. Good for ND. |
The computer would have to be programmed with metrics for rankings, since these teams mostly don't even play each other. Or do you just want AI to do it, with the hopes that the AI will have seen Rudy? BYU was not "royally screwed" because they would not have made the CFB either way. They were on the bubble and wound up just out of contention. Like ND. Though unlike ND, BYU are not big, entitled babies and are accepting it and moving on. |
I would personally love to see ND play Alabama's schedule from this year. If they managed to do as well as Alabama, I'd shut up. But they'll never, ever do it, which tells you everything you need to know about that program. |
Then why did my kid have to pay tuition to them ??? |
|
I'm not taking anything away from Indiana, because they are a great team and proved it Saturday but this was their schedule this year:

If championship games "don't matter" (Alabama), then why did it matter to BYU's final ranking? They can't keep making these rules for one team and not others. |
I would love to see Notre Dame play U Alabama this year. Head to head match-up. But, oh yeah, forgot that ND tried that with U Miami and with Texas A&M which didn't workout too well for Notre Dame. But I really enjoyed seeing the powerhouse Notre Dame football team defeat Colgate University this season. Man, Notre Dame rocks. ND even kicked butt against Syracuse this year (70-7). Now that's what I'm talking about. ND football is definitely macho !!!! |
Is your kid on the football team? I thought not. |
| Applaud ND who cares about playing a meaningless game. Duke got robbed once in a lifetime opportunity in football playoffs taken away when their platinum brand in hoops has fed the NCAA for last 40 years. |
