"Section 6. Application and duration of certain redistricting amendments.

The authorization in Article II, Section 6 authorizing the General Assembly to modify one or more congressional districts at any point following adoption of a decennial reapportionment law in the event that any State of the United States of America conducts a redistricting of such state's congressional districts at any point following that state's adoption of a decennial reapportionment law shall be limited to making such modifications between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2030, in response to actions taken by another state between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2030."

I'm not questioning why Democrats want it to be temporary but wondering if there's a precedent for time-limited provisions in a State Constitution. It strikes me as strange.

California did the same thing. It’s strange because it’s a response to the President ordering Texas to redistrict mid-decade, which is also strange.

California, Illinois, Massachusetts and others did this long, long ago.

Smells like hypocrisy.

Any vote at the federal level to eliminate partisan gerrymandering would be 100% supported by Dems and opposed by Rs. But you have to play the rigged game.

Massachusetts does not have a significant level of Gerrymandering. The state is just very democratic leaning. https://gerrymander.princeton.edu/reforms/MA
It actually has a very low rating for Gerrymandering.

Louise Lucas is my hero. Why can't she be House majority leader?

Well according to the new Virginia map, you’re wrong.

Only one party wants to pass the SAVE act and only one party has said out loud women should never have been allowed to vote and only one party wants to roll back the 19th amendment and have women never vote again.

This has been a Dem play since Tammany. This isn’t a Trump era thing.

So in your world, the Dems should just let the GOP gerrymander other states to maintain control of the US House of Representatives?

How about both parties agree to end gerrymandering, agree to statewide commissions in all 50 states and end the "winner take all" for Electoral College delegates as well? And while we are at it, adopt the "Wyoming Rule" to end the cap on the number of House members and let the House be a truly representative body. It would end the functional disparity in the House and Electoral College. The Senate structure embeds rural, mostly white voters as in control of that body.

I don’t get the GOP whining about Dem gerrymandering in CA and VA — they started an arms race, they didn’t think Dems would respond, they got it wrong. You win some, you lose some. Next time make sure you’ve got the cards before you raise.

Trump is an existential threat to our country, and the Democrats in Virginia should use every tool at their disposal to seek his eventual impeachment and removal from office.
