I am Black American. I'm not carrying my "papers". This is not the fugitive slave act. Plus, this is one time I believe we are the model minority. Haven't heard of any American blacks being caught up in the immigration thing. What my black friends talk about is how the other races were so afraid of being "othered" and want to be white and assimilate so badly, they are SHOCKED that they are being targeted. It's as if black people didn't try to warn y'all it wouldn't go well.
Search Democracy Now on YouTube for Police Chief being detained at the airport by immigration authorities.
He looks latino. Not sure he identifies as black.
To add, for many of us, the issues we deal with are not just how we self-identify— but how others, including LEO choose to identify us, and act accordingly.
This! Your threat level is based on how other people, especially LEOs instructed to racially profile people, would identify you. My family is mixed. My father has blonde hair and blue eyes. He's fairly safe, despite identifying as a biracial/black man. My mother looks black and has a slight accent. She's less safe and has been carrying copies of her documents proving her American citizenship. All of us have the number of an immigration attorney in our phones, as well as information about our rights when dealing with ICE. I said this is how this would go long before the election. People on this site told me I was being hysterical. Don't let a bunch of internet numpties convince you that you are overreacting. Do what you need to do to protect yourself and your loved ones, and then continue going about your business as best you can.
