Correct. Parents should not buy in W school districts aiming for UMD, but T-50 outcomes are excellent.

Perhaps.

BTW, Darnestown and Olney are nice areas.

Do a lot of "W" kids go to UMD or do they use it as a "safety?"

Maybe UMD are utilizing historical yield rates from the W svhools. Maybe it's a MoCo thing.

UMD does not yield protect. It is a very simple formula. If you are in the top 3% of your hs class, you're in. 4/5%, is spring admit. Outside top 5%, most likely a reject

I attended a college consultant presentation a few weeks ago at our high school. That college consultant came out and said he saw a lot of W schools, high stat rejections last year because of yield protection, He said the same profile of kid from a school like Watkins Mill would easily get in.

It's not yield protection. UMD doesn't do that. It's because students are compared to their peers in *their* schools. So, a high stat kid in a W school won't stand out, but one in WM would stand out. Big fish; little pond.

That college consultant is stealing people's money with bad info.

Correct. So many high stats kids applying to the same small group of majors. They are absolutely compared to one another. Relatively small differences in stats or LORs can make or break an application in that context.

This makes perfect sense. Guidance counselors should be communicating this info!!!

Yeah, I don't think this is right. It has everything to do with competition within a given major applicant pool. You don't need to be in the top 3% if you want to study a non-STEM major. For CS, Engineering, and maybe Bio, probably.

Agree. I know plenty of UMD admits this year and last who were not top 3%. They weren't applying to the most competitive majors though.

No. UMD admission is major blind. Only after a kid meets the criteria for general admission are LEP considered.

Anonymous wrote:Does anyone know what UMD does for admitted student days? Will there be some soon? Kid accepted and have not yet visited. Trying to see if we can go quickly to rule it in or out.

When DC went 2 years ago they had sessions by majors, some swag, and tours.

I remember sessions in March and April, but DS might not have been quick enough to notice any Feb opportunities.

If your DC is still deciding as the May 1 deadline approaches, I highly recommend Maryland Day in late April. DS wandered campus with a group of high school friends and that sealed the decision.

Yeah, just keep those eyes peeled for Admitted Students Day!
