UC Merced is equivalent to UMichigan.
The students admitted to UC Merced are of the same caliber as those admitted to UMichigan. I'm sure if you taught a class divided equally between UC Merced students and UMichigan students you would not see a difference. Likewise the quality of undergraduate instruction is exactly the same. Institutionally, the same resources available to UMichigan are available to UC Merced. This isn't to pick on UMichigan (you can substitute any other large research university like UVA, UNC, Purdue, UMass, VA Tech, Texas, Iowa, etc). |
Of the 10,000 or so admitted to UVA each year, how many do we think were also admitted to WM? Because based on the number of WM boosters insisting their is overlap I would expect the number is quite high, yet my anecdotal examples were all denied at UVA and in at WM. |
Confusing. How do they have the same stats? |
I think more people say there is overlap with W&M and other peer colleges like WF, Tulane, BC, etc. Are you talking about the overlap/exact sameness of test scores and gpa ranges? I don't think people think most UVA goers want the experience that W&M has. |
No, these schools are not all interchangeable in terms of their student populations. I teach at a suburban high school. The students who are applying to UM, UVA and UT, are very different from the students applying to UIowa. And for the record, I love UIowa. |
Anecdotes are useless of course |
Nothing happened to W&M. Same great place it ever was. Good news for people trying to get in. |
US News #s before social mobility: UVA: 25 Michigan: 28 Austin: 56 Purdue: 56 VTech: 69 Merced: 165 |
Acceptance rate has actually declined since 2020. |
Which is why I asked if there was a data set or a back of envelope comparison. I would think that if the 4500 instate admits to UVA, many also applied to WM. And the same is true of the WM admits at least instate. |
Except for 2021 (class of 2025) when it jumped to 44%. |
No that was class of 2020 and it was 41%. Class of 2021 was 37%. |
So...it's declined since 2020. |
Nobody in Virginia with a kid applying to college thinks VT is better than W&M. |
WM is the angry elf from the movie Elf. |
