I don't have a suggestion in BCC area, but just a word of warning. All the instructors will try to change your kid's swing. If you are OK with that, that's fine but this close to tryouts I'd be concerned, especially if your son is already a good hitter. My son did lessons at Ignite and they try to change every kid's swing the same way, basically emphasizing power. That's great for some kids, but if your kid is more of a contact hitter, it can really mess with them. I know several kids who all got the same "corrections". We did lessons all last winter and my kid went from being a good hitter to one with a high strikeout rate because he was always trying to drive the ball.

Hitting instruction is great, but be cautious. My younger DS had something similar happen. He naturally had a wide, low stance with just a toe tap- maybe slightly unusual looking, visually?- and was very very successful with this. Hit with power well beyond what you’d expect from his size, and for average as well. A batting instructor switched him to a taller stance with a leg kick, and it messed him up for well over a year. So many strikeouts and other issues. He has recently gone back to his original stance/load and is finally hitting well again. Instructors seem to have a style they like to push, which is fine, but maybe doesn’t work well for every kid.

Aren’t tryouts next week? I mean this kindly, but if your kid doesn’t play travel, don’t they have almost zero chance of making a public high school team?

Best option we’ve found near-ish to Bethesda is Primal 1 Baseball in Gaithersburg. It’s not affiliated with any of the travel teams so guys from tons of teams train together. Instructors are great and focus on helping players figure out how to correct/adjust their swing etc.

I don't know about Montegomery county, but a lot of counties let 8th graders try out for HS if the middle school doesn't offer the sport. It's common in Arlington for 8th graders to try out for baseball.

No MCPS HS offers baseball, only Fall softball. Only HS students can plan HS sports in MCPS.

Not true. A good number of 8th graders make JV, especially at W-L and Yorktown.

Yorktown coaches told the kids that they would take 2 8th graders and that they won’t play. I know it’s a huge honor to be selected, but wouldn’t it be better from a development standpoint to stay with your travel team for the spring and actually play in games? I can think of about almost 15 8th graders trying out. Very few for w&L and Wakefield isn’t strong so the 8th graders trying out will probably make it.

They’re still going to be expected to go to practices/games for Yorktown. M-F. Travel practices and games are also during the week not only on weekends. Typically an organization like primetime will put you on a different team if you’re playing on your high school team – those teams have Fewer to no games for the high school season. Typically it’s more of a summer travel league.
