DC officials have been caught, in writing, emphasizing only the money they hoped to make and not even mentioning safety at all.

If DC leaders say the word “safety,” they are lying to your face.

There's also studies that show they're mostly paid by poor people. Other cities have gotten rid of them because of that.

Are you saying that poor people are less able to adhere to laws?

DP. Yes, that is the elephant in the room. Poor people don't really follow the laws or act in a responsible manner, and society as a whole is exhausted from trying to make them comply. We've tried letting them do whatever they want the last few years, but no one is happy with that either.

Weird response on a thread with so many complaints that kinda stopping at a stop sign should be good enough.

The fact that black drivers pay 5x the fines that white drivers do isn't suspicious to you?

It’s true. There should be an investigation.

People who are criminals or indigent don’t pay their tickets and don’t give an f. Rest of us pay endlessly. I bet there could be a class action lawsuit for the disproportionality.

I would love this. $75 for traffic tickets in MD where apparently my back wheels didn't make a complete stop on a road with no one in sight around 2 pm in a residential neighborhood. Why is this even allowed? Who made up the charge? Why does this intersection need a camera and for all day long?

The fact that you'll get dinged for that, but not for peeling out and then cruising at 10 over for the next half hour is the part that turns people against cameras. Generally people want enforcement aimed at the worst offenders doing the most dangerous things. But no, we get robotic Olympic judges seeing if you "stuck the landing" at the sign.

This. The stop sign cameras are handing out bullshit tickets for ticky tack infractions. They will turn the public against traffic cameras more generally.

Generally, people want enforcement aimed at offenders. Except when they are the offenders. Don’t be an offender and you won’t have to get all upset when you get caught.

Oh please the stop sign cameras in quiet neighborhoods are stupid. People sit at the stop sign for like three seconds just to make sure they don’t get a ticket. It isn’t for safety. These aren’t major intersections. There is no cross walk where pedestrians walk. They are just a money grab.

Which cameras?

King Farm Rockville. I wouldn't move there for the simple reason that I wouldn't want to have to constantly think about "sticking the landing" for five seconds.

There are no stop sign cameras in Rockville. They're not legal.

However, if you don't want to drive in King Farm because you don't want to have to constantly worry about obeying traffic laws, that's a win for King Farm. Everyone in King Farm is safer with fewer drivers who don't consistently obey traffic laws.

I’m not super familiar with King Farm so maybe you can share a specific intersection so we can see. But my recollection is there are many intersections where pedestrians may cross but are not painted with a crosswalk. I feel like this makes the camera more important so cars are more likely to stop completely for a pedestrian.

DP. In fact, every intersection is legally a crosswalk, whether it's painted or not. Which raises the questions of: why are there so many unpainted crosswalks in King Farm, and what would it take for the City of Rockville to paint every crosswalk?

This is a disgusting money grab. Has nothing to do with safety. The right on red or not long enough stop cameras are especially dumb

Another driver who wants to be able to disobey traffic laws with impunity.

That is your DC government for you.

They really do not care if they piss you residents off; what are you going to do - vote them out?? Bwahahah no. Of course not.

They know that. So they do whatever they want.

They don’t even care about pissing off tourists (and ruining their own tourism industry). Tourists won’t vote them out.

"You residents"? You - not a DC resident - are explaining DC government to DC residents? Wow.

Drivers are mostly black and brown in DC because they tend to live farther away and are less likely to have jobs where remote work is allowed.

It's hard not to notice that the city is handing out stiff fines to black drivers for petty complaints about how they stop, but simultaneously loosening the rules for white cyclists ("Idaho stops") so they don't have to obey stop signs (which, naturally, cyclists still don't obey).

Eh? Stop sign cameras cite all drivers who fail to stop at stop signs, regardless of race or ethnicity. And stop-as-yield is legal for all people on bicycles, regardless of race or ethnicity. If you were sincere about racial equity, then you would know that black people also ride bicycles. But you're not; you're just using racial equity as a skeevy excuse for your desire to break traffic laws.
